Final Results
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. --- The Pioneer women's golf team finished in fifth place this week at the Grand Canyon Invitational at Wigwam Golf Course, an 18-team event. After a strong first round on Monday that put them in third place, Cal State East Bay struggled a bit in round two. Collectively, the team shot 329 (+41) on Tuesday to finish at 641 (+65) for the tournament.
The Pioneers finished second out of four CCAA schools in attendance. They were one stroke ahead of Sonoma State and 13 strokes better than Cal State Monterey Bay. Chico State bested East Bay by just two strokes.
Junior
Andrea Castellanos couldn't match yesterday's round of 75, but her 82 (+10) on Tuesday was still the second-best score on her team. Castellanos was East Bay's top finisher, placing 14th with an overall total of 157 (+13).
Sophomore
Arielle Swan-Smith shot the lowest round on the team today and posted the most consistent scores for the tournament. She matched yesterday's 81 with another 81 (+19) to finish tied for 26th at 162 (+18). One of the three golfers in that tie for 26th was fellow sophomore
Linda Brown, who posted the same overall score of 162. Brown followed up Monday's 77 with an 85 (+13) in the second round.
The fourth qualifying score for the Pioneers came from freshman
Melissa Hosman, who was just one stroke behind her teammates. She posted an 84 (+12) on Tuesday, giving her an overall score of 163 (+19), placing her 30th in the 87-golfer field.
Senior
Katie Devine was the only Pioneer to improve her score from the first round to the second. She followed up yesterday's 84 with an 82 (+10). Devine finished the event at 166 (+22), good for 44th overall.
Next up for the CSUEB women is the Sonoma State Invitational, taking place next Monday and Tuesday at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park, Calif.
