Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer women's softball team was shutout twice in a CCAA doubleheader by UC San Diego 1-0 and 12-0 on Friday.
The doubleheader setback leaves the Pioneers with a 4-10 CCAA record. For the season, the Pioneers are 6-14. UC San Diego improves to 10-4 in the CCAA and 14-10 overall.
“Our offense didn't show up today,” Pioneer coach
Barbara Pierce said. “We have to regroup and get ready for tomorrow.”
The first game of the doubleheader featured a classic pitchers' duel between the Tritons' Alexis Edwards and the Pioneers'
Lauren Zweigle. Edwards evened her record to 1-1, blanking the Pioneers on two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Zweigle (5-8) allowed one run, on six hits, no walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work. “Lauren pitched another strong game,” Pierce said. “She gave us a chance to win.”
Chelsie Kakela accounted for the Pioneers two hits.
Taryn Thomas went hitless in three at bats, ending an 11-game hitting streak. Catcher
Sara Pacioni threw out two Triton base runners attempting to steal.
The Tritons scored the only run of the game in the top of the third inning. Myra Romero led off the inning with a double, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Romero came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Amani Proctor.
East Bay had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Kakela singled and
Sara Holdridge was hit by a pitch. A double play ended the scoring threat for the Pioneers.
With two outs and a runner at third in the top of the seventh, Zweigle got pinch hitter Katie Saunders to groundout, preventing the Tritons from adding to their lead. Kakela opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a base hit. Holdridge sacrifice bunt advanced pinch runner
Mandy Dale to second. Edwards retired the next two Pioneer hitters to secure the Tritons' game one victory.
In the second game, the Tritons struck for three runs in the first inning. Caitlin Brown hit a two-run home run, while Emily McQuaid had a RBI single to account for the Tritons three runs.
The Pioneers had two runners aboard in the bottom of the third, but were unable to score.
UC San Diego added to its lead with six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Tritons' six-run inning was highlighted by Brown's second two-run homer of the game. Dyanna Imoto knocked in two runs with a double, while Romero had a run scoring single, as the Tritons ended the scoring with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series with a March 9th doubleheader on “Military Appreciation Day” at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
