VALLEJO, Calif.
— Cal State East Bay freshman Matt Lee claimed the individual title at the 2013 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on Tuesday. His final round of 74 was the second-lowest score of the day at the par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. With a three-round total of 215 (-1), Lee was the only golfer to shoot under par for the tournament. The Arizona native finished three strokes ahead of the second place finisher, Grand Canyon's Alec Dalhquist.

Cold and windy conditions made it an eventful couple of days, but the Pioneer team nonetheless had a solid showing at their home tournament, finishing in third place with an overall total of 936 (+72). They shot a 318 in today's round and ended up 24 strokes behind first-place Grand Canyon and 15 strokes behind second-place Sonoma State.

This matches the best tournament finish of the 2012-13 season for the East Bay squad, which also placed third at the Dennis Rose Invitational in Hawaii.

Competing as an individual, Lee entered the day with a five-stroke lead after posting 70 and 71 in yesterday's rounds. He led the field in par-3 scoring (+2) and par-4 scoring (-1) and finished second overall with 12 total birdies. This is the first tournament victory of Lee's collegiate career; his best performance prior to this was a fourth-place finish at the Sonoma State Invite back in October, when he shot a 211 (-5).

Lee wasn't the only Pioneer to have success this week; five of the top 12 golfers in the tournament field were from East Bay. Sophomore A.J. Hebert was also unattached to the team total and placed 11th. The left-hander shot his third consecutive round in the 70's — a 79 — that gave him an overall score of 233 (+17).

As for the team qualifiers, Senior Andy Quintero and junior Sam Lavelle tied for the top Pioneer score at 230 (+14), ranking them both eighth overall. Quintero shot an 80 in today's round. Lavelle, who ranked third with nine birdies this week, turned in a 76.

Like Lee and Hebert, senior Chris Herzog was able to break 80 all three rounds. The reigning individual champion in this event, he shot a 78 on Tuesday to finish at 234 (+18), which tied him for 12th overall.

Senior Blake Ahlin turned in the fourth-best East Bay team score, a 245 (+29) that ranked him 27th in the field. Ahlin posted an 84 in his round today. He was followed by sophomore Elliot Busichio, who also shot an 84 to finish 33rd overall at 251 (+35). Senior Greg Atkinson, competing as an individual, notched an 86 Tuesday and finished at 250 (+34), ranking him 32nd.

Next up for the Pioneer men is another local tournament hosted by Notre Dame de Namur. East Bay will head over to Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore for three rounds next Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 11-12.
