VALLEJO, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team won the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout this weekend for the first time since East Bay began hosting the tournament. The Pioneers entered the second round tied for the lead and posted a team score of 327 (+39), the second-lowest total of the day at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. This gave them an overall score of 642 (+66), which put the Pioneers two strokes ahead of second-place Cal State Monterey Bay. It marks the best tournament finish of the 2012-13 season for the East Bay women.
"The conditions were tough today," said head coach
Alan Sue after the trophy presentation. "But our golfers did a nice job keeping their composure and staying focused. It's an exciting day for our team."
Junior
Andrea Castellanos, who ranked second overall after a first-round 72, stumbled a bit today and shot an 83. However, just six of the 60 players in the field scored under 80 on the second day, so Castellanos's score kept her right in the mix. Her two-round total of 155 (+11) placed her third overall. The junior notched six birdies in the two rounds, the second-most of any player on the course.
Linda Brown was consistent this weekend, following a 78 yesterday with an 80 today. She finished tied for fifth in the individual field with an overall total of 158 (+14). Brown also ranked second out of all golfers with 23 pars in her two rounds.
After a 77 on Saturday, freshman
Melissa Hosman posted a 90 in today's round. Her two-day total of 167 (+23) was still good enough to tie her for 16th place overall.
The fourth score in the Pioneer team total came from
Arielle Swan-Smith. The sophomore's 80 was tied with Castellanos for the best round on the East Bay squad in today's action. She finished with an overall score of 170 (+26), which ranked her just inside the top half of the field at 30th.
Senior
Katie Devine was just a couple strokes behind her teammate. She improved on yesterday's 88 with an 84 in today's round, giving her a total of 172 (+28), which was good for 32nd place. Juniors
Ysabel Cabreira and
Erica Ballard also competed in the tournament as individuals today, turning in rounds of 90 and 102, respectively.
Next week, the Pioneers will take part in the Chico State tournament at Canyon Oaks Country Club in Chico. The first round will take place next Monday, with the second round on Tuesday.
