Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Pioneer women's softball team lost a pair of heartbreakers to Sonoma State 3-2 and 5-4 in nine innings on Saturday.
East Bay splits a four-game series with Sonoma State, and stands at 4-8 in CCAA play and 6-12 overall. Sonoma State improves to 7-5 in the CCAA and 14-7 for the season.
“Losing two heartbreakers made this a tough day for us,” Pioneer Head Coach
Barbara Pierce said. “We need to get back to work, and get ready for UC San Diego next week.”
In the second game, the Pioneers took an early lead with four runs in the top of the second.
Sara Holdridge opened the inning with a double.
Mandy Dale pinch ran for Holdridge.
Emily Montanez followed with a single to score Dale.
Sara Pacioni and
Shaunna Purkey were both hit by pitches.
Taryn Thomas hit a 0-2 pitch for a triple, to clear the bases.
Pioneer hurler
Andi Andersen had the Seawolves shutout through five innings.
The Seawolves tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. After loading the bases on three singles, Sonoma State leading hitter Ali Palerno hit a grand slam to tie the game.
East Bay was retired in order the next three innings.
Sonoma State scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Ancia Purdy singled to score Holli Brown with the winning run.
In the first game, Pioneer pitcher
Lauren Zweigle held the Seawolves to three runs, one earned, two walks, and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. The Pioneers were held to three hits by Seawolves winning pitcher Samantha Lipperd.
Sonoma State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Purdy led off the inning with a single and later scored on a base hit by Vanessa Currie.
The Pioneers tied the game with a run in the top of the third. With two outs, Thomas singled to drive in pinch runner
Allison Noble.
A sacrifice fly by Pacioni drove in Dale, to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Seawolves struck for two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. Danielle D'eccliss knocked in the go ahead run with a single.
East Bay went down in order in the top of the seventh.
The Pioneers will return home to face UC San Diego in a four-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on March 8.
