AUSTIN, Texas — The Pioneer women made a major second-round push on Tuesday and finished in eighth place at the St. Edward's Invitational. With better weather conditions today at Grey Rock Golf Course, the scores were down, though few teams showed as much improvement at Cal State East Bay. The Pioneers lowered their team score by 32 strokes from the first round to the second, finishing at 690 (+122), tied with the St. Edwards B-team. East Bay's second-round total of 329 was the fourth-best score of the day.
The most consistent Pioneer of the tournament was sophomore
Linda Brown, who followed an 82 on Monday with an 83 today. Her total of 165 (+23), the lowest on the East Bay team, ranked her 12th in the overall field. She shot even on par-threes for the tournament, the second-lowest score of any golfer.
Junior
Andrea Castellanos, meanwhile, turned in one of the most impressive efforts in the entire tournament in her second round. After a 94 yesterday, she shot a team-best 79 on Tuesday. Not only was this was the ninth-best round by any golfer in today's field, it marked a 15-stroke improvement from one round to the next. Castellanos' total score of 173 (+31) placed her 32nd overall.
One stroke behind her was freshman
Melissa Hosman, whose progress from Monday to Tuesday was another big reason for the Pioneers' move up the standings. Hosman followed a first-round 90 with an 84, just the fourth-best round on her team today, but enough to finish third behind Castellanos. Her two-day total of 174 (+32) put her in a tie for 37th place.
East Bay slid one more golfer into the overall top-50 in the person of sophomore
Arielle Swan-Smith. After a frustrating 95 on the first day, she played a really solid round on day two, cutting a remarkable 12 strokes of her score to finish at 83, giving her a total of 178 (+36). Swan-Smith's 48th-place finish helped the Pioneers shoot one stroke better than 10th-place Cameron University and four strokes better than conference rival Sonoma State.
The fifth East Bay golfer was senior
Katie Devine. She followed a 96 on Monday with a 94 on Tuesday, becoming the fourth member of her team to improve her score from the first round to the second. She finished 72nd overall with a total of 190 (+48).
St. Edward's won the team tournament by 26 strokes over Dallas Baptist, shooting a 632 (+64). Ryanne Haddow defeated teammate Haley Haught on the second playoff hole to claim the individual title. Both golfers shot 155 (+13) in the two regulation rounds.
Next week, the Pioneers will host the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo. Last year, East Bay finished fourth at its tournament, with Brown and Castellanos both placing in the top-10.
