Zweigle Tosses Gem in Split with Monterey Bay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif.Lauren Zweigle hurled a complete game in a Pioneer 4-2 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the first contest of a CCAA doubleheader on Friday. Cal State Monterey won the second game, 6-2.

Zweigle (2-4) allowed one earned run on four hits, no walks and nine strikeouts against an Otter team that came into the game with a .319 batting average.

“This was definitely one of my best outings of the season,” Zweigle said. “My confidence was up and I had good movement on my pitches.”

Taryn Thomas led a nine-hit Pioneer hitting attack with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Emily Montanez had two hits and drove in a run, while Vika Kafoa hit her first home run of the season.

“It was nice to see our bats come around in the first game,” Pioneer Head Coach Barbara Pierce said. “Zweigle pitched a great game, and kept their hitters off balanced.”

Zweigle retired the side in order in the top of the first on seven pitches. Thomas extended her hitting streak to six games with a double in the bottom of the first.

Meli Sanchez singled with two outs and a runner on base, Kafoa followed with a three-run homer to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0 after two innings.

A Pioneer error and two mental mistakes in the infield enabled the Otters to score two runs in the top of the third. Cori Reinhardt drove in both runs with a single.

East Bay had two runners on base in the bottom of the third, but was unable to increase its lead.

The Otters had two runners on base in the top of the fourth, but Zweigle struck out the side to halt a Monterey Bay scoring threat.

Montanez hit a run-scoring single as the Pioneers took advantage of a Monterey Bay error to add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Zweigle retired the last eight Otter hitters in order to seal the victory for the Pioneers.

In the second game, the Otters scored a run in the top of the third and added three more in the fifth to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Vanessa Avila had a two-run single in the fifth inning for the Otters.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Shaunna Purkey singled and advanced to second on a stolen base. Purkey scored when Thomas singled to extend her hitting streak to seven games.

The Pioneers made it 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Sanchez singled home pinch runner Mandy Dale.

Cal State Monterey Bay added two insurance runs in the top of the season on a two-run double by Reinhardt.
“We're getting better as a team,” Pierce said. “In today's doubleheader, we put ourselves in position to get hits, and that's nice to see.”

The four-game series between Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
