Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer women's softball team opened CCAA play with a doubleheader setback to Humboldt State on Friday. The scores were 6-2 and 9-2.
Following the doubleheader defeat, the Pioneers are 0-2 in the CCAA and 2-6 overall. Humboldt State is 2-0 in CCAA play and 6-5 for the season.
In the first game, Humboldt State winning hurler Lizzie Perez improved to 4-1 for the season. Perez allowed two runs, seven hits and recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Pioneer pitcher
Lauren Zweigle (1-3) went the distance, giving up six runs on six hits. Zweigle recorded eight strikeouts and tossed 146 pitches.
Taryn Thomas was 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored.
Sara Holdridge hit a home run and drove in two runs.
The Jacks struck first with two runs in the top of the first. Crissy Stalf led the inning off with a double and later scored on a two-run homer by Hannah Williams. Julie Pena hit a home run in the top of the third as the Jacks extended their lead to 3-0.
East Bay got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the third. Thomas opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a Holdridge single.
An RBI single by Stalf and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sarah Fox, highlighted a two-run, fourth inning for Humboldt State. The Jacks added their final run in the top of the sixth.
Zweigle held the Jacks to one run in the last three frames, while Holdridge hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Pioneers mounted a scoring threat in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on and one out, but a double play ended the game.
Humboldt State scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead in the second game.
Pioneer pitcher
Andi Andersen (1-1) did a good job in the top of the second getting out of a bases- loaded- no out jam with only one run allowed.
The Jacks took advantage of a Pioneer error to score two more runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Sara Pacioni led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, but Williams (2-3) retired the next three Pioneer hitters.
Stalf hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to give Humboldt State a 7-0 advantage. The Jacks made it 9-0 in the top of the seventh on a pinch-hit two run home run by Shelby Fowler.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Nicole Adair opened the inning with a hit.
Shaunna Purkey followed with a triple to score Adair. Purkey reached home on the play when the throw from the outfield sailed towards the Pioneers' dugout.
The four-game series between Cal State East Bay and Humboldt State will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader at Pioneer Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
