Pioneer Women Take 12th at Super San Diego Championship

SAN DIEGO -- The women of Cal State East Bay placed 12th out of 20 teams this week in their first tournament of the spring season, the Super San Diego Championship hosted by Point Loma Nazarene. In two days, East Bay shot a combined score of 667 (+91) at the par-72 Riverwalk Golf Club. They finished 39 strokes behind the champions, Cal State San Marcos, who shot 626 (+52) with three of their golfers posting rounds in the 70's on Tuesday.

The Pioneers placed three golfers in the top half of the 109-player tournament field. Junior Andrea Castellanos led the Pioneers with a score of 162 (+18). She followed up a 79 on Monday -- the only round under 80 for East Bay -- with a second-round 83. Castellanos finished tied for 21st overall.

Senior Katie Devine tied for 31th with a two-round total of 164 (+20). She was the Pioneers' most consistent golfer, shooting concecutive rounds of 82. Behind her was freshman Melissa Hosman, who posted an 85 on Monday and an 86 on Tuesday to finish at 171 (+27). She was tied for 56th overall, right in the middle of the pack.

Sophomore Arielle Swan-Smith was just behind Hosman, finishing tied for 62nd with a total of 172 (+28). She shot an 83 in round one, but stumbled a bit on Tuesday, posting an 89. Sophomore Linda Brown shot an 83 in yesterday's first round, but she had to withdraw from competition today. 

Cal State San Marcos started the day one stroke behind the leaders and ended up finshing six strokes ahead of second-place Grand Canyon. Megan Woodland of Victoria University in British Columbia was the top individual. She shot 149 (+5), one stroke ahead of Sonoma State's Spencer Heller.

The East Bay women have a week off before traveling to Austin, Texas to compete in a tournament hosted by St. Edwards. The Pioneers will tee off Monday morning, Feb. 25, at Grey Rock Golf Course.
