Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Sonoma State (7-10, 5-8 CCAA) came into Pioneer Gym and handed the Cal State East Bay men an 87-70 defeat on Friday night. It's the sixth straight loss for the Pioneers, who ultimately fell victim to some light-out shooting by the Seawolves, highlighted by a 40-point effort from Will Olsem.

It was a tight game for most of the first half with both teams playing well offensively. The Pioneers (5-12, 4-9 CCAA) shot a respectable 44.8 percent from the floor in the opening frame, but it was no match for the Seawolves, who were on fire from beyond the arc. Sonoma shot 53.3 percent and went 6-for-11 from three, including five triples from Olsem, who had 17 points at the break. They made a 10-2 run to end the half and went into recess with their biggest lead of the game to that point at 43-31. Vincent Capellino scored seven points to lead the Pioneers.

East Bay wasn't able to reverse momentum coming out of halftime, and they couldn't find an answer for Olsem's hot shooting. The Seawolves went on an 18-3 run early in the second half that essentially put the game away. The offensive struggles continued for the Pioneers, who rebounded the ball well but weren't able to get their shots to fall consistently.

East Bay shot 37.1 percent in the second half, finishing the game at 40.6 percent. They hit just 7-of-24 from three-point range, while the Seawolves knocked down 10-of-17. The Pioneers did out-rebound their opponents 41 to 29, and they grabbed an impressive 15 offensive boards.

Nick Marshall led East Bay with 16 points, matching his season high. The senior was 6-for-10 from the floor and hit all three of his free throws, also pulling in four rebounds. Capellino turned in his highest scoring game of the season, as well, scoring 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting. He had six rebounds for the Pioneers, including a game-high four on the offensive end.

Ryan Hebebrand led all players with nine rebounds, while Ota Okungbowa posted eight points and eight boards. Jacari Whitfield added eight points as well, and Gabe Kindred notched seven points, five rebounds, and three steals. Tre Mauldin scored five points off the bench, and Donavon Jackson added four.

Olsem's 40 points came on 14-of-18 shooting, including 9-of-12 from long distance. Patrick Scott (12 points), Justin Herold (11 points), and Steve Lackey (10 points) also reached double figures for Sonoma State.

East Bay hosts the annual “Battle of the Bay” tomorrow night as the San Francisco State Gators roll into Hayward. It's also Youth Night at Pioneer Gym, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. after the conclusion of the women's game.
