Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Points were at a premium in Saturday night's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup between host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Los Angeles. Both teams were held to a season-low in scoring with the visiting Golden Eagles outlasting the Pioneers 51-47.
Cal State L.A. (5-1, 3-0 CCAA) entered Saturday's game having scored 69 or more points in all five of its previous contests. The Cal State East Bay (4-5, 1-1 CCAA) defense was able to hold the Golden Eagles to a season-low in field goals made (18) and rebounds (34). CSULA did not do itself any favors making only 12-of-22 attempts at the free throw line.
Unfortunately for Pioneer fans the Cal State East Bay offense went cold as well. As a team the home side made just 19-of-61 (.311) from the field including an 0-for-14 performance from downtown. The Pioneers also had their worst team shooting night from the free throw line (9-for-17) in a four-point loss.
"You have to grind out wins
on Saturday night and we were not up to the task," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "We had 21 offensive boards, forced 25 turnovers and we only managed to score six second chance points," Barcomb went on in regards to the team's missed opportunities.
Neither team led by more than five in the first half and eight for the entire game. A late bucket by Aiwekhoe Okungbowa gave the Golden Eagles a 27-26 halftime cushion. CSULA then proceeded to open the second half scoring seven straight points to build its largest lead of the game at 34-26.
Despite not scoring over the opening six minutes of the second half, the Pioneers managed to tie the game with eight minutes left. However CSUEB came up empty in search of the go-ahead score in the second half going 8-for-32 (.250) from the field and 0-for-10 from deep.
"Cal State L.A. gets all the credit. That team dug deep when necessary and hit big shots or got second chance opportunities," praised Barcomb of the conference unbeaten Golden Eagles.Â
The key cog of the CSULA offense this season has been Paige Melville. The junior guard was averaging 18 points per game and making over 60 percent of her 3-point attempts heading into the night. Melville knocked down just 2-of-9 from beyond the arc, but managed to score 19 points including a 5-for-6 effort from the charity stripe. No other teammate scored more than eight points on the Golden Eagle roster.
The balanced offense of East Bay was led by newcomer
Stephanie Lopez's 14 points and five assists.
Danielle Peacon was effective when on the court with 11 points. Foul trouble throughout limited her floor time as she finished with four rebounds and two blocks in 16 minutes of action.
Brianna Terrance was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Saturday was the eighth consecutive game in which she has scored in double figures.
Cal State East Bay will host Cal State Monterey Bay (3-2, 0-2 CCAA) on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 5:30 p.m.
