Pioneer Men Cruise Past Menlo 75-61

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team picked up a 75-61 victory over Menlo College on Monday night in the team's final non-conference game of the 2013-14 season. The Pioneers (5-4, 2-1 CCAA) improve to 4-1 at home with the victory.

East Bay shot 52.7 percent from the field in the game, a season high. They were also hot from behind the arc, shooting 47.4 percent on three-pointers (9-for-19). Nick Grieves hit five of those, totaling 15 points, and Gabe Kindred knocked down three. Kindred finished with a team-high 18 points, while fellow senior Mark Samuels added 16.

Ryan Hebebrand grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Jacari Whitfield dished out nine assissts, the most he's had in a game this season. Overall, the Pioneers out-rebounded Menlo 34 to 29, and they bested the Oaks in assists 20 to 11. 

"Coach [Jon] Surface is an outstanding coach and a friend," head head coach Gus Argenal. "I have great respect for the Menlo program and the way they compete. I thought our defense was solid throughout the game, and we did an excellent job defending the three-point line in particular. On offense, we were sharing the ball. I'm really proud of the win tonight."

Kindred was 4-for-9 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the free throw line en route to his fifth straight game as the team's leadng scorer. He accounted for the bulk of the East Bay foul shooting, which was a pedestrian 8-for-14 as a team (.571), but still topped their opponents, who made just 10-of-21 free throws.

Samuels was 8-for-11 from the field, with most of his scoring coming on layups as the senior was able to get to the rim with regularity. Grieves knocked down 5-of-7 from long distance and reached double figures in scoring for the fifth time this season.

Hebebrand added nine points and a team-best four steals. Donavon Jackson grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Darrick McIntosh notched four points and two blocks in a strong defensive effort against Menlo's best player. 

Kenneth Farr II saw his first action of the year and scored four points in three minutes on 2-of-2 shooting.

The Pioneers led nearly the entire first half, although never by more than nine points. They went into halftime leading 38-31, and it was still fairly tight until 13:30 remained in the game. Leading by seven points, East Bay went on a 9-0 run and never looked back. They led by as many as 21 late in the second half.

Keith Bowman had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead Menlo (2-8, 1-0 CalPac).

The Pioneers are back in action this Saturday at 7:30 p.m as they hit the road for a re-match with Cal State Monterey Bay.
