Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. --- Senior
Gabe Kindred scored a career-high 28 points and set a school record going 16-for-16 at the free throw line as the Pioneer men's basketball team defeated visiting Cal State Monterey Bay (2-4, 0-3 CCAA) on Saturday night by a score of 76-61.
It's the largest margin of victory in a game so far this season for East Bay (4-4, 2-1 CCAA), which shot 44.4 percent from the field and held Monterey Bay to just 30 percent shooting. The Pioneers also had a remarkable evening at the charity stripe collectively, making 31 of their 32 attempts.Â
Mark Samuels scored 15 points for the Pioneers to move into third place on CSUEB's all-time career scoring list (1,123 points).Â
"Coach Bishop prepares his team very well," said head coach
Gus Argenal. "Monterey Bay plays extremely hard and with great pace. I was very proud of the way our team defended in transition and throughout the game. Our seniors led us from start to finish tonight."
Kindred was 5-for-10 from the field, including 2-for-3 from long distance. The senior also added four rebounds and three assists. Saturday marks the fourth time in eight games Kindred has reached 20 points, and his scoring average for the season currently sits at 19.9 ppg.Â
Ryan Hebebrand scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting and grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds.
Jacari Whitfield notched eight points, and fellow junior
Nick Grieves added seven points and four rebounds, both in 26 minutes of play.
Freshman
Kyle Frakes made a big impact off the bench for East Bay, racking up six rebounds and a career-high five blocks in 18 minutes.Â
Donavon Jackson tallied five points, and
Darrick McIntosh finished with a bucket and four boards.Â
The contest was tight in the first half as Pioneer-Otter showdowns tend to be. Kindred scored 15 before the break, but East Bay led by only four at halftime despite holding CSUMB to just 27.3 percent shooting in the frame.
"We are a work in progress," added Argenal. "Our focus is to exectue our defense with great communication and help."Â
The Pioneers opened the second half on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to double digits for the first time in the game. The Otters rallied to within seven, but East Bay rattled off another seven-point run, capped off by a layup by Jackson, to go up by 14.
CSUEB managed to keep its advantage in double figures for most of the remainder of the game as the Otters couldn't get enough shots to fall to mount a comeback. East Bay nailed all 22 of its free throws in the second half and closed out an impressive defensive performance. 61 points is the fewest they have allowed this season.
The Pioneers have a quick turnaround before taking on Menlo College on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym. The game will be broadcast live at
