Box Score RENO, Nev. – Cal State East Bay concluded its non-conference schedule on Monday night suffering a 79-62 road loss to Division I Nevada. The Pioneers kept pace with the Wolf Pack over the final 20 minutes as both teams scored 34 second half points.
Nevada (3-2) never trailed after scoring the game's opening points, and led by as many as 24. Cal State East Bay trailed by double figures throughout the second half, but a 13-3 scoring run capped off by a
Sarah Finlay jump shot closed the gap to 11 points with 3:23 remaining in regulation.
"We played a very solid second half, but just ran out of steam," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb.
The Pioneers attempted to get back in contention with a high volume of 3-point attempts. East Bay made only 4-of-21 (.190) from three, taking eight more attempts from downtown than any of the six prior games this season.
Nevada made 28-of-47 shots as a team, highlighted by the 5-for-5 effort from starter Nyasha Lesure. She finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for her first career double-double. Teammate Danika Sharp led all players with 19 points, along with eight rebounds and four assists.
Stephanie Lopez finished the night with 14 points, to go along with career-highs of eight rebounds and five assists. "Stephanie (Lopez) played an all-around great game for us," said Barcomb.
Brianna Terrance led East Bay with 15 points. She has led the team in scoring back-to-back games and three of the past four overall.
Tonight's game concludes a stretch of seven road contests to open the season. It started with back-to-back games against nationally ranked top-10 Division II squads, and concluded against a Division I team.
"Our preseason schedule was very demanding. I wanted to better prepare this team for league," said Barcomb.
Cal State East Bay (3-4) will play its home and conference opener on Friday, Dec. 6, against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
