Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- For the second straight Saturday, the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team was bested by Dominican University. Last week it took two overtimes to decide a winner, but tonight the Penguins (4-0) picked up an 84-70 win over the Pioneers (1-3) to close out the 13th annual Ron Logsdon Classic, hosted by Sonoma State.
The game was much closer than the final score indicates as Dominican stretched out its lead at the free throw line in the final minute. Nonetheless, the Penguins out-shot East Bay 48.2 to 38.8 percent from the field, 50.0 to 30.8 percent from behind the arc, and 85.2 to 62.5 percent at the free throw line. The Pioneers attempted 26 three-pointers (eight more than DU), but they only made it to the charity stripe 16 times (11 fewer than DU).
"Dominican is an extremely solid basketball team that executed virtually every time down the floor," said head coach
Gus Argenal. "We had chances to make defensive stops and didn't get it done. As a team, we are improving, but we still need to make strides on that side of the ball."
Jacari Whitfield was the Pioneers' leading scorer for the second night in the row, totaling 16 points. The junior was 5-for-16 from the floor, including 4-for-11 from three-point range.  Â
Three other Pioneers reached double figures in the game.
Mark Samuels had 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists, making six of his 13 shots.
Gabe Kindred, the team's leading scorer so far this season, had an off shooting night but still managed 11 points, four boards, and four assists.
Whitfield and Kindred were both named to the Ron Logsdon Classic All-Tounrament team, along with Dominican's Myles Carrillo and tournament MVP Dominique Taplin.Â
Freshman
Kyle Frakes shot 4-for-6 from the field, pouring in 10 points in just 11 minutes of court time.Â
Ryan Hebebrand paced the squad with seven rebounds, and
Darrick McIntosh grabbed six, four of which were on the offensive end. The junior transfer also had a team-high two blocks.Â
Fellow newcomer
Nick Grieves knocked down a pair of threes and finished with eight points and six rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
Jarred Jourdan added four points and four boards.
The game was really close in the early going as the lead changed hands several times before the 10-minute media timeout. However, with the Pioneers leading by one, Dominican rattled off an 11-0 run to make the score 30-20 with under eight minutes to go in the half.Â
East Bay did manage a rally before halftime. Freshman
Aaron Cameron scored the first points of his Pioneer career with a three-pointer, and Grieves followed with another triple on the next possession to cut the deficit to three. Devin Golston, who finished with 16 points for DU, scored four in the final minute before halftime, and Domincan took a 39-32 advantage into the break.
The Pioneers made a 9-0 scoring run near the beginning of the second half to tie the score at 43-43. Unfortunately, East Bay was never able to get over the hump and take a lead. It remained a one or two-possession for nearly the entire half, but the Penguins were able to hang on. Kindred knocked down a three to make it 73-70 with two minutes left, but Matt Hayes, who finished with a game-high 20 points for DU, came right back and hit a jumper. The Penguins made nine of their 10 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The Pioneers have one game remaining on their non-conference schedule, and it's the 2013-14 home opener. East Bay will look for its second win on the year against William Jessup University on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym.
