Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in straight sets on Friday night to visiting Cal State San Bernardino, the 14th-ranked team in the nation. It was the first time this season the Pioneers (11-16, 7-12 CCAA) have lost at home on a Friday night. The first-place Coyotes improve to 21-5, 17-1 with the win.
East Bay hit just .139 as a team, but San Bernardino was red-hot on the attack, posting a team percentage of .327. The Coyotes notched 43 kills to the Pioneers' 33, made 10 attack errors to the Pioneers' 18, and out-blocked East Bay nine to four.
"San Bernardino came in and played really sound volleyball," said head coach
Jim Spagle. "They were in system most of the night, getting good passes. We were out of our system for the majority of the match."
Kitona Offord led the Pioneers with seven kills and four block assists, extending her school record to 239 career blocks.
Suzy Ni Xu added six kills without committing an attack error.
Amber Hall notched five to go along with eight digs.
Brittany Dominguez had five kills in just one set.
"I thought Brittany played really well," added Spagle. "She brought a lot of energy off the bench."
Veronica Sanchez totaled 16 digs to lead all players in the match. Setter
Ashia Joseph had 28 assists and nine scoops.
Samantha Bruno tallied four kills, and
Katie Allen and
Hannah Bell had two each as the entire Pioneer squad struggled to gain momentum on the attack.
The first set was tight in the early going, but with the score tied 12-12, CSUSB went on a 7-1 run and never looked back for a six-point win. The Coyotes jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set, but the Pioneers clawed back and cut it to 10-8. That was as close as they'd get, though, as San Bernardino hit .441 in the frame and was simply too strong at the net.
Dominguez provided a spark, but the Pioneers continued to struggle in their offensive system in the third set. They had a real chance to extend the match, however, with the score 19-18 in favor of the Coyotes, but San Bernardino won the next three points and hung on for the four-point victory.
East Bay plays its final home match of the season against No. 12 UC San Diego on Saturday night at 7 p.m. There will be a brief ceremony prior to the match to honor the six seniors who will be competing at Pioneer Gym for the last time:
Katie Allen,
Hannah Bell,
Brittany Dominguez,
Morgan Hirzel,
Kitona Offord, and
Suzy Ni Xu.
