Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. --- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team played its final tune-up before the 2013-14 regular season on Friday night, falling 66-62 in an exhibition game to the University of the Pacific. Micah Walker scored 14 points to lead the Pioneers, and newcomer Danielle Peacon added 13 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

It was an extremely tight game statistically, as East Bay shot just 33.3 percent from the field, but held the Division I Tigers to 35.1 percent. Pacific struggled in particular from three-point range, missing 17 of 19. The Pioneers were solid at the free throw line, knocking down 24 of 34 (70.6 percent), but they still have some early-season kinks to work out after committing 30 turnovers as a team.

"We competed well with Pacific at times," said head coach Suzy Barcomb after the game. "They were composed, and they defended us very well, pressuring the ball and forcing turnovers from us. We let a few too many opportunites go by without taking advantage."

Walker did a good chunk of her scoring from the charity stripe, taking a team-high 12 foul shots and making seven. The junior also grabbed five boards. Senior Sarah Finlay notched 12 points and paced the squad with three assists. She was also the team's most efficient scorer, going 4-for-7 from the field. Junior transfer Stephanie Lopez also reached double figures in scoring, racking up 11 points and four rebounds.

2012-13 All-CCAA honoree Brianna Terrance added seven points in 21 minutes of action. Senior Rachel Finnegan pulled in eight rebounds to go with four points, while sophomore Tori Breshers grabbed five boards in 24 minutes off the bench before fouling out.

Despite shooting just 29 percent in the first half, the Pioneers jumped out to an early lead over the Tigers. They started the game on a 12-4 run, which would be their biggest lead of the game. Although Pacific rallied to take their first lead at 15-14 midway through the half, East Bay didn't let them pull away. The Pioneers actually held a lead with 10 seconds to go before heading into halftime trailing just 31-30.

The Tigers opened the second half on an 8-0 run behind Kendall Kenyon, who finished with a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. East Bay wasn't able to get closer than four points the rest of the way, but they continued to hang with Pacific, matching the Tigers almost shot-for-shot. The Pioneers trailed by just six at the final media timeout and had a couple chances to make it a one-possession game, but they couldnt get the shots to fall. UoP countered with a three-pointer to go back up by nine with 2:25 remaining, which ultimately put the game out of reach.

"We were in foul trouble all night, but we have a good core that can score and rebound," added Barcomb. "Overall this was a great learning oportunity for our program. Pacific is a really solid team, and we will grow from this experience."

The Pioneer women open the regular season next weekend in Anaheim at the CCA Tip-off Classic. They'll take on three of the top 30 teams in the nation on consecutive days, starting with No. 5 Concordia on Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 9 Emporia State on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
