Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer led with 20 minutes left in regulation during "Senior Day" at Pioneer Stadium on Friday afternoon. Sonoma State's Taylor Varnadore played spoiler after scoring the equalizer in the final seven minutes of regulation, and the game-winner with 78 seconds left in double overtime to hand East Bay a 2-1 loss.
It was a sudden end to the final home game in the collegiate careers of seniors
Jesus Leon,
Paul Dewhurst and
Bryce Bookhamer. All three were on the field when Varnadore's strike from close range ended Friday's contest.
"Jesus, Paul, and Bryce all put in strong performances tonight," said East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo. "These guys worked hard all year and I am proud of their performance and the way they carried themselves tonight."
Bookhamer provided arguably his best performance of the year with a season-high 12 saves. Dewhurst played the entire game on the Pioneers back line, and Leon was on the field for 72-of-109 minutes.
Both squads created premium scoring chances throughout the game but it was the host Pioneers who struck first.
Steffen Sauer maintained possession inches from the Seawolves endline and served a light cross into the penalty kick area. He found teammate
Chris Lara who volleyed home the go-ahead score to the near side of the Sonoma State net.
The goal gave Cal State East Bay a lead it would hold for the next 13-plus minutes. Sonoma State was given a free kick about 12 yards out from goal and the team's leading scorer Taylor Varnadore was called upon. His blast found the far right side of the Pioneer goal to tie the game in the 84th minute.
Sonoma State (9-4-4, 8-4-3 CCAA) was in attack mode all afternoon outshooting East Bay 26-12. It was ever present during extra time as the Seawolves outshot the Pioneers 5-1 with the final attempt ending the game.
A double overtime draw seemed eminent until Varnadore received a cross from teammate Nico Spann in the final minutes of the frame. His 10th shot of the game and seventh on target was true giving the visiting Seawolves a 2-1 victory.
The victory secures the CCAA North Division title for Sonoma State. Earlier in the day it was announced that the CCAA Executive Council forced Cal State Monterey Bay to forfeit three of its previous matches, and subsequently forfeiting seven points. In turn the forfeiture of points has awarded the Seawolves the division title and automatic qualifying spot into the CCAA Postseason Tournament.
Cal State East Bay (4-12-1, 4-10-1 CCAA) will finish the 2013 season on the road this Sunday, Nov. 3, against Cal State Stanislaus (8-8-1, 7-8-0 CCAA).
