10/25/2013 11:36:00 PM

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay did not become the first team this to defeat unbeaten and nationally ranked No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus on Friday at Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers were even with the Warriors through 75 minutes, but a second goal from three-time All-American Karanee Demery provided the margin in a 2-1 result.

Cal State Stanislaus (13-0-2, 11-0-2 CCAA) leads the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in scoring and was in attack mode all match. Despite facing monstrous disadvantages in shots taken (23-2), shots on goal (12-1), and corner kicks (5-0), the Pioneers made the most of limited opportunities and played with reckless abandonment in hopes of pulling off the upset.

A high bouncing ball into the 18-yard box was contested by Cal State East Bay freshman Megan Ravenscroft. Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski attempted to snatch the ball out of mid-air near the penalty kick area, and a collision ensued between the two players. Ravenscroft was able to keep the ball out of the mitts of Lewandowski, and CSUEB teammate Alyssa Rodriguez settled the loose ball before chipping home the equalizer in the 64th minute.

Demeree was the catalyst for the Warrior offense providing 11 of the team's 23 shots, and seven of the squad's 12 shots on goal. She put the visiting side ahead near the midway point of the first half after sneaking behind the Pioneer back line and receiving a long through ball from Karli Nestler. Demeree later scored the game-winner in the 77th minute after heading home a close range effort following the cross from Mikayla Clifford.

Cal State East Bay goalkeeper Briana Scholtens made nine saves and several other key plays to keep the game close. She was involved in a heavy collision with Demery in the 89th minute after the two rushed at each other for possession near the edge of the 18-yard box. Both players exited the game and did not return and Scholtens was carted off the field with an apparent leg injury.

Cal State Stanislaus, the No. 1 ranked squad in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) West region poll, can clinch the CCAA North Division crown with at minimum a tie against Sonoma State on Sunday.

Cal State East Bay (3-10-2, 3-8-2 CCAA) will host Humboldt State (3-9-3, 1-9-3 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 27.
