Box Score CARSON, Calif. – One night after
Jason Smith's perfect shooting night gave Cal State East Bay a big road win, the Pioneers couldn't find that same shooting touch in a 69-54 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-6, 3-3 CCAA). East Bay (4-6, 3-3 CCAA) returns home from Southern California with a weekend split, keeping its conference record at .500.
It was all Toros on this night, as they defended their home court by shooting 46.3 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from three, and led virtually the entire way. CSUDH started out-shooting the Pioneers early in the game and stretched its lead out to 20 just before halftime. East Bay made a few small runs in the second half, but never got closer than 10 points. They shot just 33.3 percent for the game and were out-rebounded 43 to 29 by the Toros.
Jurrell Turner led all scorers with 18 points on an efficient 6-for-11 from the floor. He was also 6-for-8 from the free throw line in a game where the two teams combined to take just 26 foul shots.
Gabe Kindred kicked in 12 points as the only other Pioneer in double figures.
Tre Mauldin added five points and posted team-highs in both rebounds (six) and assists (three).
Ryan Hebebrand also grabbed six rebounds to go along with four points off the bench.
Vincent Capellino turned in a five-point game for the Pioneers, who got nine made field goals from their starters.
Diame Lamine led the way for the Toros with 12 points, and three of his teammates kicked in 11 points apiece. With the home victory, Cal State Dominguez Hills has now won seven straight over East Bay. But the Pioneers still head back north with a 1-1 record after breaking a similar losing streak to Cal State LA. Thanks to that win, the Toros and Pioneers are still tied in the standings with a trip to Hayward still on CSUDH's schedule.
With the toughest part of their schedule now behind them – East Bay managed a 4-6 record while playing eight of their first 10 on the road --,the Pioneers are back home next weekend to host Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona. The games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, both at 7:30 p.m.
