Box Score CHICO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team lost on the road Saturday night to Chico State in front of a packed house of over 1,200 at Acker Gym. The 68-43 defeat is the fifth straight for the Pioneers (5-11, 4-8), who have struggled through a tough CCAA schedule so far in 2013. 43 points marks the team's lowest scoring output of the season, and it's the first time East Bay has been swept on the road in a weekend series. Fortunately, they return home for four straight games starting next week as they look to reverse their momentum.
The Wildcats (10-6, 7-5 CCAA) took control of this game early. Midway through the first half, they went up 29-12 thanks to a 13-0 run from which the Pioneers would ultimately never recover. Chico State held the Pioneers to just 18 points in the first half, and despite three-pointers by
Gabe Kindred and
Nick Marshall near the end of the half, they took a 16-point lead into the break.
Marshall and
Jurrell Turner hit consecutive jumpers to open the second half, but that was as close as the Pioneers got to a comeback. Chico State once again rattled off 13 straight points, and by the time the teams reached the final media timeout, the Wildcats led by 30, essentially putting the game away. Sean Park led all players with 15 points for Chico. Rashad Parker (12) and Jordan Barton (10) also reached double figures in scoring.
As a team, East Bay shot 29.5 percent from the floor, their lowest single-game percentage of the season. They were out-rebounded 45-35 and attempted just nine free throws, their second-lowest figure this year. Marshall led the Pioneers in scoring, going 4-for-8 from the field with nine points and four rebounds. Kindred turned in seven points and three assists in 17 minutes of play.
Tre Mauldin notched five points and led the team with seven boards, playing 23 minutes off the bench. Turned added six points, while
Donavon Jackson notched two points and matched his season high with four rebounds.
Ryan Hebebrand scored five points and grabbed six boards, including four on the offensive end.
East Bay is back home next weekend for a pair of games at Pioneers Gym. The team will begin its second swing through the conference when it hosts Sonoma State on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday in the annual “Battle of the Bay.”
