Trouble in Turlock as Pioneer Men Fall 80-70

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The men of Cal State East Bay dropped their fourth straight game Friday night, losing on the road at Cal State Stanislaus 80-70. The Pioneers (5-10, 4-7 CCAA) played an efficient game, but they just weren't able to cut into the Warriors' lead in the second half. This marks East Bay's longest losing streak of the season. With just one game left in the team's first swing through the CCAA, they'll try to build off an impressive offensive night and rattle off a couple wins to get back in the race.

The game was tight for most of the first half, as both teams struggled a bit shooting the ball in the early going. Stanislaus jumped out to an eight point lead – their biggest yet – just before the half. But with six seconds left, Gabe Kindred knocked down a three, drew a foul, and converted the four-point play, sending the Pioneers to halftime down 33-29.

East Bay shot a tremendous 56.3 percent in the second half, but they were never able to make a run, partly because of the Warriors' ability to get to the line. For the game, the Pioneers shot 45.2 percent from the floor, their best mark since Dec. 1 at Sonoma State, and they committed just nine turnovers, which is tied for their second-best game total of the season.

And yet, Stanislaus led throughout the second half and stretched their lead out to 14 at one point. The difference was on the free throw line, where East Bay was just 9-for-18. The Warriors, meanwhile, attempted nearly twice as many from the charity stripe. They found net on 24-of-31 foul shots, good for 77.4 percent. That's a difference of 15 points just on free throws.

Despite the loss, Kindred had one his best games in a Pioneer uniform, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists (all team highs). The junior from Oakland was 7-for-11 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from long distance. Nick Marshall grabbed five rebounds to go along with 14 points. He turned in his best shooting night of the year, converting 7-of-12 shots from the field.

Jurrell Turner was the third Pioneer in double figures, notching 12 points. Turner got into foul trouble and sat much of the first half (and ultimately played just 22 minutes), but he was able to do some damage late in the game, including going 4-for-4 from the line. Jacari Whitfield posted six points and three assists, while Spencer Britschgi added six points on a couple of long balls. Ota Okungbowa grabbed six rebounds off the bench to tie Kindred for the team lead.

A trio of players led the scoring for the Warriors. Marcus Walters paced the team with 17 points, and Nick Hodge added 16. Wes Bartole scored 10 points at the free throw line and posted the game's only double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. As a team, Stanislaus shot 41.0 percent from the floor.

East Bay still has a tough test ahead this weekend, as the team travels up to Chico State tomorrow night for a meeting with the Wildcats. If the Pioneers shoot the basketball like they did tonight, they'll have a great chance to grab their first win since Jan. 11.
