Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. – The Pioneer men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Cal State Monterey Bay 1-0 on September 30.
In the 92nd minute, the Otters' Andrew Breault scored off Pioneer goalkeeper
Rene Martinez, who mishandled a long throw, for the game winner. For Breault, it was his first goal of the season.
“A lot of their attack came from long throw ins,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “In overtime they had
a long throw in. Our GK came out to win the ball but wasn't able to hold on to it. The ball fell to a CSUMB player and he touched it in.”
Both teams played on even terms in a scoreless tie during regulation.
The Otters put up two attempts, including a shot by Max Brixley that was turned away by Pioneer goalkeeper Byrce Bookhamer in the 21st minute.
The Pioneers'
Felix Jaekel attempt on goal went wide in the 23rd minute. Jaekel had another shot go wide five minutes later.
East Bay had a good rush to open the second half as
Chris Lara had a shot saved by Otters goalkeeper Evan Drake in the 46th minute. In the 56th minute, Martinez, who took over for Bookhamer to begin the second half, turned away a penalty shot by Julian Salas. A minute later, Jaekel had a shot saved by Drake.
Drake turned away a shot by
Rey Suarez in the 70th minute. Brixley had two shots in the final 10 minutes, including an attempt that went wide as time expired in regulation.
“We maintained the majority of possession throughout the game and controlled the tempo well,” Cumbo said. “Our midfielders and wings did a great job with the ball today and had a major impact for us.”
With the defeat, the Pioneers are 1-4-2 in CCAA play and 2-5-2 overall. The Otters win their first game in CCAA play and stand at 1-6. Cal State Monterey Bay is 1-7 for the season.
Cal State Monterey Bay outshot the Pioneers by a 15-5 margin. Jaekel led the Pioneers with three shots. Bookhamer recorded two saves in the first half. Martinez had one save.
“The result is a heartbreaker but there's nothing we can do about what has happened, just focus on playing them again at home,” Cumbo said.
Following six straight CCAA road games, the Pioneers return home on October 5 to face Chico State.
