Shianna Falk scored a pair of unanswered goals to lead the Cal State East Bay women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday afternoon in Carson. The Pioneers (3-3-1, 1-3-1 CCAA) allowed an early goal but came from behind to pick up their first win of the CCAA campaign and finish the weekend undefeated after Friday's 1-1 draw with Cal State LA.
Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 1-5 in the CCAA and 2-6-1 overall. The Pioneers were outshot by a 16-13 margin. Falk led the Pioneer offense with five shots.
Breahna Berry followed with three shots, all on goal.
Sydney Ruegsegger came off the bench to put up two shots. Goalkeeper
Jamie Botteon finished with eight saves.
“Today wasn't our best performance, but we played well enough to win,” Pioneer coach
Amy Gerace said. “I'm pleased that we were able to play Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills on the road and come away with a win and a tie.”
A successful penalty kick by Ani Eishoei put the Toros ahead 1-0 at the 10 minute mark. The Toros Caitlin Peterson had a shot blocked 12 minutes later. In the 23rd minute, Claudia Toledo shot attempt was saved by Botteon.
The Pioneers tied the match in the 30th minute on a penalty kick by Falk.
Botteon turned away a pair of Toro shots the following five minutes. Falk had a shot saved by Toro goalkeeper Tiffany Hollis in the 38th minute.
A header by the Toros' Olivia Patterson was blocked with one second left in the first half.
Two shot attempts by Berry were turned away by Hollis in the 50th and 52nd minute.
The game remained tied until the 64th minute when Falk scored her second goal.
Shannon Fontes passed the ball to Eugenie Foote who sent a perfect cross to Falk. The header by Falk went untouched into the back of the net. For Falk, it was her third goal of the season.
Botteon saved a shot by Toledo in the 76th minute. The Pioneer backline allowed the Toros only one shot in the final 14 minutes. In their last four games, the Pioneers have allowed only four goals. “Our defense has been outstanding the last four games,” Gerace said.
The Pioneers will play their fifth straight CCAA road game at San Francisco State on September 28.
