LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal State East Bay and Cal State L.A. played a tense 110 minute match with both teams combining for 39 shots. The result was a 1-1 tie played at Jesse Owens Stadium on September 21.

“I'm really proud of the team for their commitment this entire season, to what we are trying to accomplish,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “After giving up a bad goal, I thought we stayed focused the remainder of the game.”

The Golden Eagles outshot the Pioneers by a 3-2 margin in the second overtime. Shianna Falk had two shots go wide in the 103rd and 108th minutes. Pioneer goalkeeper Nina Cefalo turned away a shot by Megan Ollar with two minutes left in the second overtime.

East Bay continued the pressure three minutes later when Falk had a shot saved by Golden Eagles goalkeeper Gabriella Batmani. In the 97th minute, Zuly Diaz rebounded her own shot and hit the crossbar. Allison Ventura and Falk had their shots go wide in the final three minutes of the first overtime.

Following a wide shot by Adriana Valdez, Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute when Tera Piserchio stoled the ball in front of the net and scored. For Piserchio, it was her second goal of the season.

The Pioneers, who have held their last three CCAA home opponents to only three goals, tied the match in the 72nd minute. Diaz, who has played outstanding defense for the Pioneers this season, scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Kara Yamamoto.

“Zuly was fantastic and took control of the game,” Gerace said. “She's had a great season and was very motivating tonight with her performance.”

East Bay continued the offensive pressure as Ariana Gordon shot was blocked by a Golden Eagle defender in the 78th minute and Eugenie Foote attempt on goal was turned away by Batmani.

Berry had two shots saved in the 20th and 35th minutes by Batmani.  Cefalo recorded two saves in the first half including a save on a shot attempt by Stephanie Lopez in the 22nd minute and Janeth Arroyo in the 39th minute.

“Cal State L.A. is a very good team and although we had multiple opportunities to score, including two off the post in overtime, we'll take the result and turn our attention to Cal State Dominguez Hills on September 23,” Gerace said.
