Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. – The Pioneer women's soccer team gave host the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors all they can handle in a 1-0 setback on September 14.
Cal State Stanislaus improves to 2-1 in the CCAA and 4-1 overall. Cal State East Bay stands at 0-2 in CCAA play and 2-2 for the season.
“I thought we played a hard fought match against a good team,” Pioneer coach
Amy Gerace said. “Our back line continues to be relentless and our midfielders played another tremendous match.” Our captains continue to give us great leadership on the field.”
The Warriors scored the only goal of the match in the opening 17 seconds when Alexia Poon took a pass from Karenee Demery and put a shot in the net from 19 yards out. For Poon, it was her second goal of the season. Two minutes later, Bernie Bettencourt had a shot turned away by Pioneer goalkeeper
Jamie Botteon.
Cal State Stanislaus continued the pressure with five unanswered shots in the following 14 minutes. The Pioneers held firm as Botteon saved three Warrior scoring opportunities.

Rachel Sloss had a shot go over the net in the 33rd minute.
Allison Ventura had a header sail wide five minutes later. For the half, the Pioneers were outshot by an 8-2 margin.
In the second half, the Pioneers came out fired up and put immediate pressure on the Warriors' defense. Eugenie Foote had a shot blocked in the 48th minute, while seconds later, Sloss had an attempt go wide.
Nina Cefalo, who replaced Botteon in net in the first half, turned away a shot by Bettencourt in the 51st minute. “Nina came into the match in the first half and played a great game,” Gerace said. A minute later, the Pioneers
Sara Silva had a shot go over the net.
In the next 15 minutes, the Warriors swung the momentum with five unanswered shots, but were unable to put the ball in the net. The Warriors' Katelyn Nebesnick shot went wide in the 79th minute.
Cal State East Bay would put pressure on the Cal State Stanislaus backline one final time, recording three shots on goal by
Ariana Gordon in the 85th minute and a pair of attempts by
Kara Yamamoto in the 86th and 88th minutes. Warrior goalkeeper Millie Brown saved all three shots and preserved the hard earned victory for the Warriors. For Brown, it was her third shutout of the season.
The Pioneers were outshot by a 16-9 margin. Yamamoto recorded two shots on goal while Sloss had two shot attempts. Botteon and Cefalo had four and three saves respectively.
Cal State East Bay will play at Chico State on September 16. The match will begin at 11:30 a.m.
