SAN FRANCISCO – The Pioneer cross country teams opened the 2012 season with a good showing at the USF Invitational on Sept. 1.
Competing against Division I and II completion, the Pioneer men's team placed eighth out of 17 teams.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was Castro Valley High School product
Will Weekes, who placed 25th out of 107 scored runners. Weekes covered the 8k course in 26:28.90.
Gavin Ramos was timed in 27.29.00 to take 50th place honors.
Jose Gonzales placed 59th in 27:53.00 while
Justin Pryor recorded a time of 28:30.20 to finish in 67th.
Senior
John Vergara ran a good race to take 84th in 29:29.0.
Luis Francisco Perez was 93rd with a time of 30:23.00 while
Orlando Ramirez concluded the Pioneers' good performance with a 97th place finish in 30:49.0
“Our men ran very well,” Pioneer coach
Ralph Jones said. “We had five runners post times under-30 minutes which enabled us to finish in the Top 10.”
The Pioneer women's cross country finished 11th out of 19 teams, placing ahead of CCAA rival Sonoma State.
Celina Vera was 46th with a 5k time of 19:20 to lead the Pioneers' performance. Robin McClinton was close behind in 47th in 19:21.60.
Imani Heath turned in a time of 19:33.00 to take 50th place while Megan Osten was 76th in 20:09.70.
Returning runners Amanda McNabb finished 88th (20:44.10), Nastassia Hamor 89th (20:45.80) and Tiffany Duffy 94th (21:01.20).
“We had a good outing,” Jones said. “Our top three finishers did an exceptional job to stay together during the race.”
