LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. –
The Cal State East Bay men's golf team wrapped up its first NCAA postseason appearance in program history with a 10th-place showing at the Central/West Regional at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. on Wednesday. Though the Pioneers missed the top-five cut to advance to the NCAA Finals, they finished in the top half of the field that featured eight nationally-ranked squads and had two players finish in the top 50 among over 100 individuals.

East Bay capped the event with a team total of 905 (+41) to finish one stroke ahead of 11th-place Bemidji State and 28 strokes out of the top five. The Pioneers posted a third-round score of 303 (+15) to take three strokes off its second-round total and hold onto 11th on the final day of the regional.

A.J. Maxedon had East Bay's best round on the final day, carding a two-over 74 to take three strokes off his round-two score and post his best round of the tournament. Maxedon birdied five holes in the third round, including four of the front nine where he went one-under. With the 74, Maxedon finished with a three-round total of 231 (+15) to tie for 68th in the field of 108 players.

Both Blake Ahlin and Jeff Cornez capped the event with a four-over 76 in the third round. Ahlin got back two strokes from his Tuesday score and finished the tournament with the Pioneers' best overall score, a six-over 222, to finish 24th overall. Ahlin also laid claim to East Bay's best round of the regional, posting a four-under 68 to open the event and card the team's only below-par round. Cornez posted three birdies on the final day and claimed a three-round total of 227 (+11) to tie for 46th on the individual leaderboard to cap his Pioneer career.

Also playing in his final tournament for Cal State East Bay, A.J. Warren matched his day-two score with a 77 (+5) in the final round. Warren birdied three holes in the third round to match his total from the first day and posted a total score of 230 (+14) to finish in a tie for 61st overall.

Chris Herzog rounded out the Pioneer contingent on day three, posting his second straight six-over 78 to finish in a tie for 68th with Maxedon with a three-round total of 231 (+15).

Cal State Stanislaus came back from 10 strokes and three places back on the final day to take the regional team title thanks to an even 288 on day three. The Warriors posted a three-round total of one-over 865 to pass Chico State and post a four-stroke win over the Wildcats. Both teams will head to the 2012 NCAA Division II Finals along with third place Colorado School of Mines, fourth place Western Washington and fifth place Grand Canyon.

Colorado School of Mines' Jim Knous claimed the individual title by two strokes with a three-round total of 209 (-7). Defending national champion Kyle Souza finished second with a five-under 211. Cal State Monterey Bay's Alex Sobstad and Dixie State's Kyle Chappell, who won a tie-breaker, will advance to the NCAA finals as the tournament's top two individuals not playing with a team that advanced.
