MORAGA, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team bounced back with a pair of wins over Dominican, 12-0 and 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers (11-11) scored 17 runs to complete the season sweep of the Penguins following a doubleheader sweep at home last week.
Game 1: Cal State East Bay 12, Dominican 0 (5 innings)
The Pioneers got started scoring early and made it a habit in the opener, getting three hits from
Mishka Hamor,
Devin Salmones and
Jamie Yaller to take a 1-0 lead through one inning. East Bay took advantage of a Dominican error in the second to tack on three more runs. After
Devon Mercurio walked,
Nicole Adair reached on the error to put two on for
Taryn Thomas, who tripled to center to drive in both runs. Another walk put two on for Yaller, whose bunt brought in another run to put East Bay up 4-0.
The Pioneers broke the game open in the fourth, putting together nine hits to score eight runs. With one out, Thomas, Hamor and Yaller each singled before another Penguin error brought in Hamor and Thomas.
Taylor Neumann followed with an RBI single to put East Bay up 7-0. Three batters later, with the bases loaded,
Breezy Johnson doubled down the right field line to bring in another pair. Batting for the second time in the inning, Adair made up for her earlier groundout with an RBI single, while Thomas followed with her second single of the inning to bring in the seventh run of the inning. Finally, Hamor singled to bring in Adair and put the Pioneers up 12-0 before the Penguins ended the inning.
East Bay gave up just one hit over the final two innings to earn its fourth eight-run rule win of the season. Starter
Talia Ferrari allowed just three hits and struck out three in four innings and combined with
Lauren Zweigle, who tossed one hitless inning, to post the shutout. Thomas led Pioneers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while Hamor finished a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Johnson made the most of her one at-bat, bringing in two runs and scoring one and Adair finished with two runs and an RBI.
Game 2: Cal State East Bay 5, Dominican 1
After one and a half scoreless innings, the Penguins scored first, getting their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single off East Bay starter
Kelly Lowe. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Pioneers answered back in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of two Dominican errors to score three runs. With two outs and Johnson on third, Hamor reached on an error to bring in Johnson and tie the game 1-1. Yaller and Neumann followed with back-to-back singles to bring in another run and give East Bay a 2-1 lead.
Jessica Machado singled through the right side to bring in Yaller and put the Pioneers up 3-1.
The two teams went scoreless for the next two and a half innings before East Bay got back on the board in the top of the sixth.
Emily Montanez led off the inning with a single and Adair followed a batter later with a one-out triple to left center to bring in Montanez. Hamor followed with a two-out RBI single to give the Pioneers a 5-1 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Andi Andersen came on to pitch for Lowe and gave up a pair of hits before getting out of the jam thanks to a double play. Andersen finished off the game with her second scoreless inning to give East Bay the sweep.
Lowe picked up her fourth win of the season after allowing just one run on one hit and striking out eight in five innings of work. Andersen came on to toss two scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two. Neumann finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Machado, who made her first start at designated player for East Bay, was 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Johnson continued her hot day, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run.
Cal State East Bay returns to action this weekend when it travels to Cal State Monterey Bay for a four-game series. The Pioneers will look to secure their first CCAA victory since Feb. 11 when the series kicks off on Friday at 12 p.m. in Seaside.
