CARSON, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team was shut out by Cal State Dominguez Hills in a series opening doubleheader sweep, falling 4-0 in the first game before dropping an 8-0 decision in six innings in game two. The Pioneers (7-5, 3-3 CCAA) were stopped by a Toros' pitching staff that struck out 22 and gave up just seven hits, while East Bay left 10 runners on base in the two losses.

Game 1: Cal State Dominguez Hills 4, Cal State East Bay 0
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through 4.5 innings in game one. Though the Toros loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, East Bay starter Talia Ferrari got out of the jam with just one run coming around and the game went into the bottom of the fifth with CSUDH leading 1-0 and the two teams combining for just three hits.

Cal State Dominguez Hills started off the fifth with a walk and a single that knocked Ferrari from the game in favor of Lowe, and after a fielder's choice loaded the bases, back-to-back walks brought in another two runs to give the Toros a 3-0 avdantage. A sacrifice fly allowed Dominguez Hills to tack on one more run before Kelly Colker came on to end the inning with a line drive and a pop up.

Trailing 4-0 going into their final at-bat, the Pioneers tried to make the most of the last three outs, putting two runners on before reliever Stephanie Jimenez shut things down with a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball to end the game and pick up the save. Ferrari took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in four innings of work. Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Lauren Harper picked up the win, shutting out the Pioneers and allowing just two hits and striking out 11 before turning things over to Jimenez who struck out two in a no-hit inning of work. Taryn Thomas and Jamie Yaller were the lone East Bay players to post hits in game one.

Game 2: Cal State Dominguez Hills 8, Cal State East Bay 0 (6 innings)
Jimenez and East Bay starter Lauren Zweigle both took no-hitters into the fourth inning, with Jimenez tossing a perfect game until Mishka Hamor singled with one out in the top of the fourth. The Toros answered with a hit of their own to break up Zweigle's no-hitter but the game headed to the fifth with no score. East Bay put together a pair of one-out singles to put runners on second and third, but Jimenez got out of the jam with a pair of groundouts to maintain the shutout.

Cal State Dominguez Hills opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of an error to put a runner on with two out for Stephanie Hua, who went yard, to put the Toros up 2-0 before Andi Andersen came in for Zweigle to get the last out of the inning. East Bay answered with a pair of hits in the top of the sixth but could not get past Jimenez to send the game into the bottom of the sixth with the Toros up 2-0. In its half of the inning, Cal State Dominguez Hills broke out, scoring six runs on four hits and one error, including a two-run double by Christina Chavez and a three-run homer from Daisy Beltran that gave the Toros the eight-run rule win.

Jimenez picked up her fifth win of the year, tossing the complete game and allowing just five hits and no runs while striking out nine. Zweigle took the loss despite allowing only two hits and two unearned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Hamor, Thomas, Taylor Neumann and Emily Montanez each tallied a hit for the Pioneers in the loss.

Cal State East Bay returns to action tomorrow, when it meets Cal State Dominguez Hills for the second half of the four-game series. The Pioneers and Toros will get underway with the doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Carson.
