HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team played their hearts out against CCAA co-leader Cal Poly Pomona in front of 810 homecoming fans and the return of the 1961-62 Cal State Hayward men's basketball squad on February 11.
The result was a heartbreaking 52-51 defeat to the Broncos.

Roshun Wynne gave the Pioneers a 48-45 advantage with 2:53 left in the game.
Mark Samuels converted three free throws as the Pioneers extended their lead to 51-47 with 2:14 to play.
The Broncos DeRonn Scott sanked a three-pointer at the 1:38 mark and scored the game winning basket with 48 seconds remaining.
Wynne missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
“Our kids put up an incredible effort,” Pioneer coach Will Biggs said. “We played hard against a big and physical team.”
Cal State East Bay held a 12-5 lead with 15:04 left in the first half.
Tre Mauldin hit a three-pointer with 8:14 remaining to maintain a Pioneer seven point advantage.
The Pioneers led by as many as eight points and shot a sizzling 59.1 percent from the field in the first half.
Cal Poly Pomona cut the Pioneers lead to 35-32 at halftime.
Samuels scored a game-high 19 points for the Pioneers. Wynne added 12 points and three steals.
“We played before a wonderful crowd tonight,” Biggs said. “It would have been nice to win this game over a tough opponent.”
The loss drops the Pioneers to 5-12 in CCAA play and 7-14 overall.
Cal State East Bay will play at Cal State Monterey Bay on February 14.
