KAHUKU, Hawaii – The Pioneer women's cross country team finished 23rd out of 25 teams at the NCAA II West Regionals on Saturday. East Bay defeated Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo in the team standings. The West Regionals, hosted by Hawaii Pacific University, was held at the Kahuku Golf Course in Kahuki, Hawaii.
“It was an extremely challenging race with over 211 runners on the starting line and the humidity,” Pioneer coach
Ralph Jones said. “Our women ran as hard as they could, but the elements were just not that favorable, as numerous athletes from other teams passed out from the heat.”
Robin McClinton led the way for the Pioneer women's cross country team as she placed 79 and 81st overall out of 170 total runners with a 6k time of 24:04.33. Celina Vega was the second Pioneer to finish, taking 107th place in 24:48.99.
Imani Heath was 130th in 25:32.11, while
Nastassia Hamor clocked a time of 25:42.05 to finish in 137th place.
Amanda McNabb took 139th place in 25:57.38 while
Julia Wilson posted a time of 26:27.20 to finish in 141st place.
Vanessa Mares rounded out the Pioneers performance as she finished 152nd in 26:48.76.
“The experience was a good one, and the lessons were valuable,” Jones said. “We will now rest a bit and prepare for the track season.”
Chico State won the team title, five points better than second place Alaska-Anchorage.
