TURLOCK, Calif. - The Pioneer cross country teams finished third at the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational on October 6. Host Cal State Stanislaus captured both the women's and men's titles.
The women's cross country team finished eight points out of second place. Imani Heath finished eighth to lead the Pioneers. Heath, who placed 11th overall out of 34 runners, completed the 5k course in a personal best time of 19:12.70. Amanda McNabb (19:53.0, 11th) and Nastassia Hamor (20:00.90, 13th) were the next two Pioneer finishers. McNabb's time was a personal best. Both McNabb (16th) and Hamor (18th) placed in the top 20 overall.
Julia Wilson recorded a time of 20:18.0 to place 17th and 26th overall. Vanessa Mares rounded out the Pioneers effort with a 19th place finish in 20:57.40. Mares finished 31st overall.
“We used the Stanislaus meet as a training meet, and a number of our women athletes didn't compete as we are trying to get them healthy and prepared for the conference meet,” Pioneer coach
Ralph Jones said. “We have been training pretty hard but still had some good performances. Both Imani Heath and Amanda McNabb posted personal bests.”
Justin Pryor ran a good race to finish 13th and 16th overall out of 25 runners. Pryor finished the 5k course in 16:28.10.
Chris Gallagher was close behind Pryor in 14th place with a time of 16:31.90.
John Vergara (16:41.30), Jose Mejia Gonzalez (16:47.40) and
Orlando Ramirez (17:02.90) finished 15th, 16th and 17th respectively.
“Our men were without top runners
Will Weekes and
Gavin Ramos, but ran really well as a group,” Jones said. “Freshman
Justin Pryor was our top finisher for the men, and all five runners crossed the line within 32 seconds of the #1 runner. If we can continue to run like this, but faster, we will see significant improvement at the conference meet.”
On October 20, the Pioneer cross country teams will compete at the CCAA Championships.
