Pioneers Drop Five-Set Heartbreaker to Cal State Stanislaus

10/5/2012 10:12:00 PM

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay volleyball lost at home on Friday night in five sets to Cal State Stanislaus (20-25, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17, 15-13). The Pioneers (6-9, 1-7 CCAA) took a two-set advantage, but they were unable to put the match away. Stanislaus (6-10, 3-5 CCAA) came storming back, winning the third and fourth sets handily, before hanging on in the fifth set to complete the comeback. It's the second straight loss for Cal State East Bay, who will look to rebound Saturday night versus Chico State and salvage a weekend split.

Although only the fifth set finished with a tight score, this was an extremely close match overall. To wit, the two teams posted the exact same attack percentage for the match (.222). The Warriors edged the Pioneers in total kills (60-56) and assists (54-52), but the teams were evenly-matched offensively. Ultimately, East Bay committed a few more errors than their opponents. The statistic that really stands out is 12 service errors for the Pioneers.

Individually, senior Nicole Boyle had a solid night, posting a double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs while hitting .300. She also scored three service aces. Junior Hannah Bell was the focal point of the Pioneer attack for the first time this season. She led the team in attempts (44), kills (12), and digs (18). Junior Suzy Ni Xu added 10 kills and two blocks from the opposite side. Senior Nikki Long posted eight kills, five of which came in an impressive first set when she led all scorers.

Junior Samantha Siebert filled up the scoresheet with 28 assists, two kills, seven digs, and an ace. The other Pioneer setter, senior Danielle Stewart, added 19 assists and three kills of her own. East Bay didn't have quite the same presence in the middle as they have in some of their better performances. On this night, junior Brittany Dominguez, senior Jade Sanford, and sophomore Samantha Bruno combined for just 10 kills on 33 attempts with three blocks. Overall, the Pioneers had a decent match attacking, but struggled on the defensive end. As a team, they were out-blocked 9-5, and they also had trouble preventing long Warrior scoring runs in the third and fourth sets.

Andrea Fett led all players with 23 kills on 64 attempts for the Warriors, to go along with 17 digs and four blocks. Janay Bankston added 12 kills, while setter Kendall Munoz posted 46 assists and 14 digs. Cal State Stanislaus put up team attack percentages of .098 and .034 in the first two sets, both losses. They roared back, however, to hit .448, .303, and .269 in the final three sets, all victories.

After a particularly difficult-to-swallow loss, Cal State East Bay will have to turn the page quickly for Saturday's match. The Pioneers will have their hands full with Chico State as they look to avoid being swept for the weekend. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym.
