WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- The Cal State East Bay women's golf team finished in second place at the Dennis Rose Invitational at the Waikoloa Beach Course in Hawaii this week. The Pioneers posted a total score of 938 (+98), 23 strokes behind tournament champion Grand Canyon University. East Bay was in second after each of the first two rounds, and was able to hold off third-place tournament host Hawaii-Hilo in round three.
Every Pioneer finished in the top-20 of the six-team field, though only one East Bay golfer really excelled on Tuesday. Junior
Andrea Castellanos shot the low round of the tournament in the third round with a 73, which vaulted her into third place overall. Her total score of 229 (+19) was ten strokes behind the individual champion.
Linda Brown placed fourth, right behind her teammate. She was in second entering Tuesday, but an 80 in the third round gave her a total of 232 (+22).
Melissa Hosman was just behind them, finishing tied for sixth place. Hosman also struggled in the third round, shooting at 82 for a total of 236 (+26).
Katie Devine hit the ball extremely well in both rounds on Monday and sat in fifth place. But an 86 in the third round dropped her to a tie for 12th at 241 (+31).
Arielle Swan-Smith matched Devine's 86 on Tuesday, finishing with a total of 254 (+44), good for 19th place.
Second place is the highest the Pioneers have finished in a tournament this season, and like the men's team, they saved their best for the last event of the fall schedule. The East Bay women will compete again on February 25 in Austin, Texas, in a tournament hosted by St. Edward's University.
