Second-Half Surge Hurts East Bay in Senior Day Loss

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer men's soccer team honored seniors Florian Reppin, Andres Ponce, Matt Mitchell and  goalkeeper Rene Martinez prior to their match against Cal State San Bernardino. The four seniors had a good match, but the Pioneers allowed three second half goals in a 3-0 setback to the Coyotes.

With one non-conference game remaining, the Pioneers are 2-7-5 in the CCAA and 4-8-5 overall. Cal State San Bernardino finished at 5-5-5 in CCAA play and 5-5-7 for the season. The Pioneers had 15 shots, including seven on goal. Derrek Driggs led the Pioneers with three shots. Martinez turned away eight shots, all in the first half.

"This is a frustrating result today,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said.  “I think we played well and
created some chances in front of the goal. Their goalkeeper made some key saves throughout the match. I think if we score when we should the outcome of the match is different.”

The Pioneers had their opportunities to score in the first 15 minutes of the match. Mitchell had a shot go wide in the 11th minute, while Sam Duenas also had an attempt carry wide of the net four minutes later.

In the 36th minute, Alex Diosdado had his shot hit the post, and a minute later, Timo Baeuerle attempt on goal was saved by Tanner Olinger.

The Coyotes put up 10 shots, including eight on goal. Martinez turned away all eight shots as the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. 

Cal State San Bernardino took a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute when Dylan Faggioni scored from five yards out. Ricardo Velasco scored his sixth goal of the season in the 81st minute to give the Coyotes a 2-0 advantage.

The Coyotes third and final goal was scored by Leo Mendoza in the 86th minute.

East Bay had three scoring opportunities in the final 15 minutes of the match. In the 75th minute, Arthur Ethel had a shot go wide, while five minutes later, Reppin attempt on goal was saved by Olinger. The Pioneers final opportunity to score came in the 85th minute when Driggs shot carried wide of the net.  

"We're glad we have one more game so the we can end the season the way it should end," Cumbo said.

The Pioneers will conclude the 2012 season on October 30th with a home game against Sonoma State. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m.
