Pioneers Chalk Up Fourth Shutout in Scoreless Draw with Tritons

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer men's soccer team turned in another good effort following a 0-0 tie with U.C. San Diego on Friday night.

The Pioneers, 2-0-2 in their last four matches, are 2-6-5 in CCAA play and 4-7-5 overall. U.C. San Diego stands at 7-3-4 in the CCAA and 8-4-4 for the season.

East Bay was outshot by a 14-10 margin. Both teams had five shots on goal. Rey Suarez and Timo Baeuerle each had three shots. Suarez recorded two shots on goal.  Pioneer goalkeepers Rene Martinez (four saves) and Bryce Bookhamer (one save) combined for the shutout.

"Tonight wasn't the most attractive game but I'm pleased with the result,” Pioneer coach Andy Cumbo said. “UCSD is a very good team and has been very successful this year. For us to shut them out at home and earn another draw is positive for us."

The Tritons got off a pair of shots in the opening seven minutes of the first half.  East Bay countered with a shot by Carlos Barboza  which was turned away by Triton goalkeeper Josh Cohen in the 11th minute and an attempt on goal by Baeuerle which sailed wide a minute later.

Martinez recorded four saves in the following 27 minutes. Suarez had a shot go wide in the 43rd minute.

The Pioneers put tremendous pressure on the Triton defense in the final six minutes of regulation.  Suarez had a shot saved by Cohen in the 84th minute.  Barboza had his shot go wide 30 seconds later. Suarez and Baeuerle each had their shots saved by Cohen in the final two minutes.

"Our midfield and forwards made some good adjustments and became more dangerous going forward,” Cumbo said. “We had a few very good looks that I was pleased with."

The lone shot in the first overtime was by the Tritons' Cory Wolfrom which went wide of the net in the 99th minute.

Alex Portela had his attempt on goal go wide in the 102nd minute for the final scoring opportunity for the Tritons.

The final scoring chance for the Pioneers came in the 104th minute when Alex Diosdado shot went wide of the net.

"We're still improving and building momentum,” Cumbo said. “The guys are having a
good time and our recent performances have been quality. We're eager to play another strong Southern school on Sunday."
      
Cal State East Bay will host Cal State San Bernardino on October 28 on “Pioneer Senior Day”. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m.
