SANTA ROSA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's golf team tied for sixth place at the Sonoma State Invite at the par-72 Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club with a team score of 624 (+48). The Pioneers finished tied with CCAA rival Chico State and 22 strokes behind tournament champion University of British Columbia in a 12-team field. Sophomore
Linda Brown continued her strong season with a top-five individual finish.
Brown was the only Pioneer to rank in the top-20, but East Bay did manage to place three golfers in the top half of the 64-player field. Brown fired off an even-par 72 in the first round, which was the third-best single-round score of the tournament. After Monday, she sat in second place, just one stroke off the lead. Brown then posted a 77 on Tuesday to finish at 149 (+5), still just four strokes behind the winner.
Senior
Katie Devine shot an 80 on Monday, but came back strong with a 76 on Tuesday, the lowest second-round score for the Pioneers. Only eight other golfers in the field bested Devine in that second round. Her total of 156 (+12) was good for 21st place overall.
Sophomore
Arielle Swan-Smith had a consistent performance and finished with the team's third-best overall score. She turned in rounds of 80 and 78 for a total of 158 (+14), two strokes behind Devine, which tied her for 31st in the tournament.
It was a bit of an uneven two days for freshman
Melissa Hosman, the Pioneers' low scorer last week in Seaside. She posted a first-round 75 and was tied for sixth overall at the end of Monday's action. However, an 86 in the second round gave her a total of 161 (+17) and a 40th place finish.
Junior
Erica Ballard shot a 93 in the first round, followed by a 97 in the second round. Her total of 190 (+46) put her 59th in the overall field. In a wet week in the bay area, the Pioneers had good luck for the most part when it came to the weather. Tough pin placements on Tuesday made for higher second-round scores across the board, and East Bay wasn't impervious to that.
British Columbia finished with a team total of 602, four strokes ahead of second-place Grand Canyon University. UBC's Kylie Barros took the individual crown with a total score of 145 (+1), two strokes ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay's Mckenna Corriea. UBC's 602 and Barros' 145 both shattered the tournament scoring records for the Sonoma State Invite.
The next test for the Pioneers is an ocean away. Next week, both the men's and women's teams will travel to the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo.
