SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's golf team turned in a solid performance with a fourth place finish at the Otter Invitational, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay. The Pioneers finished in the middle of the seven-team field, as they placed two golfers in the top-10 and four golfers in the top-20 overall.

Bayonet Golf Course proved to be a tough test for the participants, but two East Bay golfers posted impressive scores. Freshman Melissa Hosman played a consistent tournament, shooting 80-76-79 for a 235 (+19), which tied her for fourth place in the 38-player field.

Right on her heels was sophomore Linda Brown, who posted the low score for the Pioneers in last week's tournament. Brown shot 81 in the first round, but matched Hosman the rest of the way to finish at 236 (+20), tied for sixth place overall. Brown now has two top-10 finishes already under her belt in the young season.

Senior Katie Devine shot the lowest score for East Bay in the first round with a 78, and at the time she was tied for fifth overall. Devine followed that up with consecutive 83's in the next two rounds to finish with 244 (+28), which placed her 13th among all golfers.

Just behind Devine was sophomore Arielle Swan-Smith, who was unable to crack the 80-stroke barrier but nonetheless played a consistent tournament. Swan-Smith turned in rounds of 83, 80, and 85, which totaled 248 (+32), good for an 18th place finish.

The fifth Pioneer qualifier was junior Erica Ballard, who finished tied for 29th with a 265 (+49). Ballard shot an impressive score of 82 in the second round, but it was sandwiched between rounds of 89 and 94, which kept her from finishing higher.

The tournament was won by Grand Canyon University, who finished at 931, 31 strokes better than Cal State East Bay and 11 strokes ahead of second-place Cal State Monterey Bay. Grand Canyon was led by individual champion Charlotte Jaengkit, who scored 222 (+6) and posted the low round of the tournament with a first-round 72 (E).

The Pioneers are back in action in the bay area next week. The women trade places with the men and head up to Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club for the Sonoma state Invitational.
