BELLINGHAM, Wash. –
The Cal State East Bay women's golf team traveled up to the great Northwest to play their first tournament of the season, hosted by Western Washington. The Pioneers finished eighth out of 13 teams as one of only two CCAA schools competing. All five qualifying golfers finished in the top-50 overall, and the Pioneers had one representative crack the top-10.

Sophomore Linda Brown posted the low score for Cal State East Bay, including the two lowest rounds of the tournament. She scored 78 and 75 for a total of 153 (+7), which placed her eighth overall. Brown is off to a strong start after a great finish to her freshman season, when she was the Pioneers' best golfer in the final five tournaments.

After Brown, a trio of Pioneers were tightly grouped right in the middle of the pack overall. Freshman Melissa Hosman was consistent in her first collegiate tournament. She shot 82 and 80 for an overall score of 162 (+16), second-best on the team. Right behind her was junior Andrea Castellanos, who posted the Pioneers' best score in three tournaments last year. Castellanos was a little rusty in round one, shooting 84, but she bounced back with a solid 79 in the second round to finish at 163 (+17).

One stroke behind her was senior Katie Devine, who turned in rounds of 83 and 82 for a 164 (+18). Hosman, Castellanos, and Devine finished 32nd, 36th, and 37th, respectively. Sophomore Arielle Swan-Smith improved her score by four strokes from the first round to the second. She posted 87 and 83 for a total of 170 (+24) that placed her 49th in the tournament.

Hawaii-Hilo won the team competition, finishing 34 strokes better than the Pioneers and six strokes ahead of second-place British Columbia University. However, British Columbia's Casara Wong won the individual title. She shot 147 (+1), two strokes ahead of Hawaii-Hilo's Kacie Harada.

East Bay was in seventh place after the first round, but Anna Bourland of Washington shot a 71 (-2) in the second round to help the Vikings pass the Pioneers for seventh. Cal State East Bay also finished 14 strokes behind conference rival Chico State.

The Pioneers are back in action next week when they travel down to Seaside for the Otter Invitational, where the team placed seventh last season.
