Second-Half Rally Falls Short as Pioneers Fall to Cal State Stanislaus, 93-82

HAYWARD, Calif. –
A second half comeback fell short as the Pioneer men's basketball team lost to Cal State Stanislaus, 93-82, on January 21.

The Pioneers conclude the first half of CCAA play with a 5-6 record. Cal State East Bay is 7-8 for the season. Cal State Stanislaus improves to 7-5 in the CCAA and 11-5 overall.

Mark Samuels led four Pioneer players in double figures with 26 points on 10 of 18 from the field and six of nine from the free throw line. Roshun Wynne and Jacari Whitfield scored 13 and 12 points respectively. Tre Mauldin came off the bench to 11 points.

The Warriors' Reggie Jones led all scorers with 30 points. Ronnie Sawyer recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pioneers got off to a slow start, trailing 13-0 while missing their first seven shots.

Jason Smith hit a 3-pointer with 14:24 remaining in the first half to account for the Pioneers first basket.

Donald Gaines three-point play increased the Warriors advantage to 35-14 with 7:52 left.

With the contributions of reserve players Adam Watts, Vincent Capellino and Mauldin, the Pioneers rallied to trail 46-40 with 1:56 left in the first half.

Samuels, who scored 15 points in the first half, converted three free throws as the Pioneers trailed 51-45 at intermission.

The Pioneers stayed close to open the second half and tied the game 63-63 on a Wynne 3-pointer with 11:18 remaining.

Jones converted a 3-point play 10 second later to give the Warriors a 66-63 lead. Cal State Stanislaus increased its margin to 81-71 at the 4:28 mark.

Cal State East Bay cut the lead to 81-73 with 2:57 left on a Mauldin basket.

The Warriors maintained a 12-9 advantage the remainder of the second half to pick up the victory.

The Pioneers will play seven of their last 11 games on the road, beginning with a contest at Cal State L.A. on January 27.
