Pioneers Complete Comeback in 3-1 Victory over Cal State Stanislaus

Behind a combined 25 kills from sophomore Katie Allen and junior Nicole Boyle, the Cal State East Bay volleyball team picked up its second win of the week, topping Cal State Stanislaus, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19) on Friday night. The Pioneers (9-3, 5-3 CCAA) came back from a first set loss to finish the match with three-straight wins. 

Both Boyle and Allen notched double-doubles in the victory, with Boyle posting a team-leading 15 kills and adding 12 digs. Allen contributed 10 kills and 10 digs, while Kristin Neary joined her and Boyle with a 24-assist, 11-dig double-double. Kitona Offord led the team, hitting at a .417 clip and adding six kills, while Morgan Hirzel posted a .300 hitting percentage and nine putaways. Samantha Bruno had another successful night, swinging at a .312 clip and posting six total blocks, including a pair of solo efforts at the net.

Libero Leslie Ray led all players with 23 digs on the night, while four players contributed two or more total blocks, helping the Pioneers out-block the Warriors 9-6.5. East Bay hit at a .201 clip on the night and held Cal State Stanislaus to a .111 hitting percentage. The Warriors were paced by Lianne Vicchio's nine kills and 19 digs and Jessica Lehner's .533 hitting percentage and 30 assists in the losing effort.

Set 1 – Cal State Stanislaus 25, Cal State East Bay 22
The Pioneers opened the match with a quick start, building a 12-9 advantage early on, with Boyle and Offord combining for five of the first 12 points. The Warriors came storming back, however, scoring eight straight points to take a 17-12 lead. The Pioneers put together a 7-3 run that cut the Warrior lead to just one point, 20-19, and saw CSUS commit five errors, but the Warriors finished off the set with five of the last seven points. Three of the Warriors final five points came off East Bay errors.

Set 2 – Cal State East Bay 25, Cal State Stanislaus 20
Cal State East Bay got out to another good start in the second set, opening an early 10-4 lead thanks to three early kills by Allen. The Warriors responded, though, with an 8-3 run to take their first lead of the set. Trailing, 14-13, the Pioneers reeled off four straight points behind Boyle's serve to regain a three-point advantage, 17-14. Cal State Stanislaus wasn't done, answering nearly every Pioneer point and tying the set at 21-21 before taking a 22-21 lead on a kill by Kayla Giles. After CSUEB took a timeout to regroup, the Pioneers posted four straight points, capped by a kill by Boyle to tie the match at 1-1.

Set 3 – Cal State East Bay 25, Cal State Stanislaus 20
For the third straight set, the Pioneers opened an early advantage, 10-5, thanks to three kills from Boyle and five errors by the Warriors. Cal State Stanislaus again showed its teeth, however, digging in to put together a 6-1 run to tie the set at 11 points apiece. East Bay regained a 17-14 lead, thanks to another three errors by the Warriors. Stanislaus answered back with to pull within one point before the Pioneers reeled off five straight points to take a 23-17 lead. With its back against the wall, Stanislaus scored another three points, but the Pioneers closed out the et on a kill by Bruno to go up 2-1.

Set 4 – Cal State East Bay 25, Cal State Stanislaus 19
The Warriors were determined to stave off the Pioneers as long as possible in the final set, exchanging points early on and taking a 17-15 lead midway through the set. East Bay was determined to finish out the match, however, as it scored six unanswered points, including a pair from Allen and a block from Offord and Nikki Long. Trailing 21-17, the Warriors closed the gap to three points, 21-18, before East Bay notched four of the final five points to pick up its second victory of week.

Cal State East Bay returns to action tomorrow night to close out its three-match week at Chico State. The Pioneers and Wildcats are set for a 7 p.m. start at Acker Gym. Chico State need five sets to topple Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday night and enters Saturday's match with three straight wins and having won seven of its last eight matches.
