SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Despite a sluggish start and the heat, the Pioneer men's soccer team fought hard in a 3-1 setback to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
“We had a sluggish start to the game,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “I think the heat had an effect on the players performance, we didn't move off the ball as much, had a lot of unforced turnovers and lacked creativity at times. We did have a fair amount of the ball, but struggled at times having a purpose for it.”
D.J. Vigil gave Cal State San Bernardino a 1-0 in the 18th minute with his first goal of the season.
Marco Martinez made it 2-0 for the Coyotes with a goal in the 28th minute. Virgil scored his second goal of the match in the 51st minute to give the Coyotes a 3-0 advantage.
The Pioneers'
Daniel Borst scored his first goal of the season on a free kick from 40 yards out in the 80th minute to close out the scoring.
“On a positive note, we scored a great goal off a free kick,” Cumbo said. “We were able to execute the goal the way we drew it up. Even though the players were fatigued after the game, the motivation is still high and we eager to play UCSD on Sunday.”
Cal State East Bay was outshot 13-2. Borst and
Javier Martin accounted for the Pioneers two shots.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer was solid in the net turning away five shots.
Cal State East Bay, 0-7 in CCAA play and 1-8 overall, will play at UC San Diego on October 2 at 2:30 p.m.
