SEASIDE, Calif. - Playing shorthanded in the backfield and missed scoring opportunities in the second half hurt the Pioneers in a 2-0 defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 11.
“Three out of our four starters in the backline were out of the lineup with injuries,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said.” “We had good looks, especially in the second half. Today, we couldn't find the back of the net. One shot was turned away by the crossbar on an open goal with three minutes to play.”
Cal State Monterey Bay controlled the tempo in the early going. The Otters, with three shots in the first four minutes, opened the scoring on a goal by Max Brixley off a deflection in the 7th minute. Julian Salas was credited with the assist.
In the first 16 minutes, the Otters outshot the Pioneers by a 7-1 margin.
Goalkeeper
Bryce Bookhamer kept the Pioneers in the game recording five saves as Cal State East Bay was outshot 9-3 in the first half.
The Pioneers turned the tempo of the game to open the second half getting three shots on goal including a shot by
Javier Martin.
The Otters regained possession of the game and increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Connor Ray with an assist from Aaron Kochman in the 63rd minute.
Cal State East Bay had a golden opportunity to score in the 87th minute, but a shot by Christian Lara hit the crossbar.
Bookhamer was solid in the net with seven saves. The Pioneers ended up with 10 shots including three on goal. Martin led the Pioneers with three shots.
The Pioneers, 0-2 in CCAA play and 1-3 overall, will play at Sonoma State on Sept. 16.
