TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team tripled its offensive output from Saturday, but could not overcome Cal State Stanislaus, which topped it 6-2 and 9-4 to complete the four-game sweep on Sunday at Warrior Field. The Pioneers (7-9, 4-8 CCAA) were swept in four games for the second time this season despite coming from behind in game two and nearly salvaging the final game of the series.
Game one saw the Warriors get out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, getting to Pioneer starter
Lauren Zweigle early on. After Stanislaus strung together a single and a double to drive in the run in the first, it scored another two in the third to take a 3-0 lead and knock Zweigle from the game in favor of
Catherine Schorn.
Warriors starting pitcher Brittani Weatherford held East Bay to just three hits through the first five innings, while Schorn gave up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to give Cal State Stanislaus a 6-0 lead. Though the Pioneers put up a pair in the top of the seventh with two outs, reliever Alyssa Coehlo got out of the inning to end the game and give CSUS its third win of the series.
Zweigle took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the year after allowing three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Weatherford was the winner, improving to 5-8 on the season and tossing six shutout innings for the Warriors.
Taylor Neumann went 2-for-3 for Cal State East Bay, while both
Jamie Yaller and
Nikki Freiberg both scored a run for the Pioneers.
The Warriors got out to an early 4-0 lead in the third inning of game two, scoring four runs on two hits and four walks off starter
Kelly Lowe who lasted just 2.1 innings for East Bay.
The Pioneers answered back in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs of their own to tie the game 4-4. After
Emily Montanez reached on an error to lead off the inning,
Dani Foster's one-out single put two on for Freiberg, who singled to load the bases. Yaller followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Montanez and cut the lead to 4-1. With two on and two out,
Sarah Velasquez doubled through the left side to bring in a pair of runs before
Devon Mercurio singled to bring in the Pioneers' fourth run of the inning and tie the game.
After a quiet bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, Cal State Stanislaus broke up the tie with two runs off reliever
Talia Ferrari to take a 6-4 lead. Weatherford, who came on in the fifth, shut the Pioneers out over the final 2.2 innings to help the Warriors hold on, giving up just two hits and struck out two. Meanwhile, Stanislaus scored another three runs in the top of the sixth to secure the victory and the four-game sweep.
Weatherford picked up her second win of the day and third of the series, while Ferrari took the loss after tossing 2.2 innings and giving up five runs on six hits.
Velasquez paced the Pioneers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and a pair of RBI in game two. Freiberg went 2-for-3 with a run and Foster finished 2-for-4 and scored a run as well.
Cal State East Bay returns to action on Tuesday and Wednesday, when it is scheduled to make up a pair of rained out doubleheaders at Chico State. The Pioneers will continue their schedule of 12 games over eight days with a doubleheader with the Wildcats on Mar. 8 in Chico.
