East Bay Plays Hard in 71-64 Setback to Cal State LA

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team played hard for 40 minutes in a 71-64 defeat to visiting Cal State LA on December 19.

With the lost, Cal State East Bay stands at 2-2 in the CCAA and 4-4 for the season. Cal State LA improves to 4-1 in CCAA play and 8-1 overall.

The Pioneers, who played without leading scorer Mark Samuels, set a school record by committing only three turnovers the entire game.

Cal State East Bay converted 16 of 19 free throws, but shot only 37 percent from the field.

Nick Marshall recorded a double-double for the Pioneers with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jurrell Turner scored 10 points in 25 minutes of action. Jason Smith and Roshun Wynne each scored nine points.

Quinton Lilley, starting his first game of the season, had eight points on 4 of 5 from the field and seven
rebounds.

The Golden Eagles' Quinton Watkins led all scorers with 17 points.

“We kept fighting down to the wire,” assistant Pioneer coach Darren French said. “Our team showed a lot of character. Committing only three turnovers in a game is tremendous. “Quinton Lilley played well while Roshun Wynne did a lot of good things on the court.

A three-pointer by Smith gave the Pioneers a 13-2 lead with 15:45 remaining in the first half.

Cal State LA went on a 17-2 run the following five minutes to take a 19-15 advantage.

The Pioneers regained the lead, 23-19, on a 3-pointer by Marshall.

A three pointer and a basket by Ryan Wetherell gave the Golden Eagles a 30-27 lead with 5:20 left.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Pioneers 13-7 to lead 43-34 at halftime.

Lilley scored six points as the Pioneers opened the second half with a 9-4 run to trail 47-43.

Cal State LA opened up a 10-point advantage with 13:00 minutes left in the second half.

The Pioneers came within six points, 66-60, with 2:05 remaining.

A three-pointer by Wetherell and two free throws by Jibreel Nasir in the final 1:30 secured the victory
for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State East Bay will return to action with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay on December
30.
