Late Rally Falls Short as Pioneers Suffer First CCAA Defeat to Dominguez Hills

HAYWARD, Calif. -
A late second half rally fell short as the Pioneer men's basketball team lost to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 77-73 on December 18.

The Pioneers, (2-1) suffer their first defeat in CCAA play. Cal State East Bay is 4-3 for the season. Cal State Dominguez Hills is 2-2 in the CCAA and 3-3 overall.

As a team, the Pioneers shot 34.4 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 44-28 margin.

Roshun Wynne scored a game-high 19 points and two steals. Tre Mauldin came off the bench to score 14 points including four 3-pointers. Quinton Lilley gave the Pioneers a boost during the second half comeback with 10 points.

Myron Green and Wayne Andrews each scored 18 points for the Toros.

“Cal State Dominguez Hills played a solid game against our quickness,” Pioneer coach Will Biggs said. “We have to regroup and play Cal State Los Angeles tomorrow.”

Trailing 58-49 with 10:44 left in the game, the Pioneers battled back.  A three-pointer by Wynne and a basket by Lilley closed the Toros' gap to 60-59 with 8:58 left.

Lilley converted a layup with 6:12 remaining to give the Pioneers a 63-62 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 6-2 run to regain the lead 68-64 with 3:50 remaining.

The Pioneers countered with a three-pointer by Wynne at the 3:09 mark to cut the Toros' lead to a single point.

A  basket by Green increased the Toros' advantage to 73-68 with 49 seconds left.

Once again, the Pioneers rallied as Jacari Whitfield hit a three point basket with 31 seconds remaining to trail 73-71.

A pair of free-throws by Wynne kept the Pioneers close 74-73 with 23 seconds left.

The Pioneers had one last chance to go ahead, but Jason Smith missed a three-pointer with four seconds remaining.

The Toros secured the victory with two free throws in the final second.

In the first half, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 23-15 run to take three point lead with 7:36 left. The Toros led by as many as nine points late in the first half.

“I love this team,” Biggs said. “We battled back and came within a minute of winning this game.”

The Pioneers will host Cal State Los Angeles on December 19 at 3:00 p.m.
