STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pioneer men's basketball team put up a tremendous battle before losing a tough 66-63 exhibition game to Pacific on Saturday night.
A pair of three-pointers by
Jacari Whitfield gave the Pioneers a 56-49 lead with 8:59 remaining in the game.
The Tigers went on a 7-1 run to trim the Pioneers' lead to 57-56 with 7:14 left.
Mark Samuels hit a layup with 6:10 remaining to increase the Pioneers advantage to 59-56.
UOP converted four free throws the following three minutes to take a one point lead.
Samuels hit a layup giving the Pioneers their final lead of the game with just over three minutes remaining.
Once again, the Tigers took advantage of the charity stripe as Andrew Bock hit a free throw with 44 seconds left to give UOP a 64-63 lead.
The Tigers increased their lead to 66-63 on a pair of Lorenzo McCloud free throws with seven seconds left.

Jason Smith missed a three-pointer with one second remaining.
Marshall converted a jumper to give the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead.
The Tigers scored seven unanswered points to grab a 7-2 advantage with 18:43 left in the first half.
A jumper by Marshall cut the Tigers' lead to 11-7 with 14:08 remaining.
The Tigers went on a 6-2 run the next two minutes to enjoy their biggest advantage in the first half at 17-9.
Samuels hit a three-pointer with 10:37 left as the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to tie the game 17-17.
The Tigers outscored the Pioneers 14-8 the following five minutes to jump out to a six-point lead.
Rodrigue Maza nailed a three-pointer just seconds later to cut the Tigers margin to 31-28.
The two teams played on even terms the remainder of the first half as UOP took a five point lead into the locker room.
For the game, the Pioneers made 24 baskets including eight 3-pointers. The Tigers converted 21 field goals and only two baskets from the 3-point area.
Samuels led all scorers with 30 points on 12 of 18 from the field and 4 of 5 three pointers.
The Pioneers will open the 2011-12 regular season on November 11 as they host Dominican University.
