East Bay Takes Sixth at Dennis Rose Invitational

HILO, Hawaii – Behind a pair of top 15 individual finishes, the Cal State East Bay women's golf team claimed sixth at the fourth annual Dennis Rose Invitational, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo this week. The Pioneers topped three teams, finishing with a three-round total of 920 (+80) at the par-70 Waikoloa Beach Course.

Sophomore Andrea Castellanos continued her impressive fall form with back-to-back rounds of 72 (+2) to open the tournament and finishing with a 13-over 223. Castellanos followed up her fourth-place showing at Sonoma State with a tie for eighth in a field of 50 competitors to lead the Pioneers for the second consecutive tournament. The Union City, native's two rounds of 72 marked East Bay's low scores.

Freshman Linda Brown joined Castellanos in the top 15, tying for 13th with a 226 (+16) and taking at least one stroke off her score with each successive round to finish with a 74, the team's lowest score in the final round. Sophomore Deanna Tyndall came in four strokes behind Brown, taking 20th overall with a three-round total of 230 (+20).

Arielle Swan-Smith tied for 33rd overall, finishing with a 244 and capping the tournament by taking seven strokes off her second round score. Katie Devine rounded out the field for Cal State East Bay, placing 37th and three strokes behind Swan-Smith.

As a team, East Bay topped seventh-place St. Martin's by 28 strokes. The Pioneers also notched the win over Redlands and Montana State-Billings and finished 14 strokes behind Academy of Art.

Grand Canyon claimed the tournament title, coming in five strokes ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay with a team total of 878. The Otters' Courtney Soekland took home individual medalist honors with a three-under 207 to beat out the Antelopes' Charlotte Jaengkit by three strokes. Soekland also posted the tournament's low round with a 66 (-4) in the final round.

The Dennis Rose Invitational marked the penultimate tournament of the 2011 fall campaign for the Pioneers. East Bay will travel to the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational in Arroyo Grande next week. The tournament will feature several Division I teams, including host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
