Herzog Leads Pioneers to Sixth at Dennis Rose Invitational

HILO, Hawaii –
A third-place showing from Chris Herzog helped guide the Cal State East Bay men's golf team to sixth place at the sixth annual Dennis Rose Invitational, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo this week. The Pioneers ended the tournament with a team total of 894 (+30) after three rounds at the Waikoloa King Course in Hilo.

Herzog shot par for the tournament, carding a 216 (E), finishing with a one-under 71 in the final round. Herzog matched Sonoma State's Eric Ash and Cal State Monterey Bay's Alex Sobstad with his 216, marking a new season low. Blake Ahlin joined Herzog among the leaders with a tie for 15th, carding a 221 (+5) and matching Herzog with a 71 in the final round. Ahlin took four strokes off his scores from the first two rounds on the last day and finished nine strokes better than his previous season best of 230.

A.J. Warren finished seven strokes back of Ahlin with a 228 (+12) and tied for 32nd in the field of 54. Warren carded a 72 (E) in the final round to improve on a pair of 78s in the first two rounds. Sitting two strokes back and tied for 37th was Jeff Cornez with a 230. Cornez peeled six strokes off his second-round score with a 73 (+1) on the final day. A.J. Maxedon rounded out the Pioneer contingent in a tie for 49th, carding a three-round total of 236 and taking six strokes off his first round score with a third-round 76 (+4).

As a team, the Pioneers finished just four strokes back of St. Martin's and Cal State Monterey Bay, which tied for fourth in the nine-team field. East Bay topped Hawaii Pacific, BYU-Hawaii and Academy of Art, finishing seven strokes ahead of HPU. Each of the Pioneers carded their best round on the final day of the tournament, giving the Pioneers a new low round for the year with a 287 (+4) to close out the event.

The host Vulcans claimed the team tournament title with an even 864 to beat second-place Grand Canyon by eight strokes. Hilo also went one-two in the individual standings, with Jamie Hall claiming medalist honors with a seven-under 209. Runner up Travis Russell posted the tournament low round on Monday, carding a 67 (-5) to open the event.

Cal State East Bay will close out the 2011 fall campaign next week when it travels to Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club for the Sonoma State Invitational. The Pioneers will open the fall finale on Nov. 7 in Santa Rosa.
